As we look to history and the development of technology, as Pursell (2007) explains, technology has helped society as a whole develop, starting with agriculture. However, this development has also created a more significant gap between marginalised groups and privileged groups in society. It has created its own ethical dilemmas regarding who can learn about, access and benefit from the technologies being developed. This is where “Technologies for Humanity” conceptualises the creation and use of technology for social change and the improvement of human life. It goes beyond mere profit and efficiency; instead, it focuses on equitable provisions, access to essential resources, and participation by all members of society. Therefore, societal needs are taken into account, which could lead to a fairer and more inclusive society.

Bridging the digital gap is one example where “technologies for humanity” can make a difference. With the internet being such a significant component of today's economy, citizenship, and society, digital literacy is essential. Providing access to the internet, digital literacy training, and other resources helps marginalised communities fully participate in democracy, access information, and pursue economic opportunities.

In addition, phones and the internet allow for easy participation in citizens’ movements. This way, people can express their views, promote movements, and even hold confident leaders to account. Through social media and other means of communication, grassroots activities can expand the reach of marginalised groups, thus enabling democracy to be more participatory.

The concept is also illustrated through healthcare technologies such as telemedicine and health applications. These tools offer convenient access to healthcare services, helping to ensure that everyone, regardless of their geographical or financial circumstances, can obtain medical attention. Such access improves the overall health and knowledge of the public, which is essential for a functioning democracy.

Other examples include the use of modern technologies for data management, which increases governance accountability. With the help of open data technologies, the public can access information about government actions and public expenditures with ease and take an active role in the governing process.

In conclusion, the application of technology for humanitarian purposes can reshape society by removing obstacles to equality, empowerment, and democracy. Such technologies that focus on human needs and social issues stand a better chance of making positive changes in people's lives.

The IEEE Tech4Good (T4G) program, hosted by Humanitarian Technology, offers funding opportunities to support grassroots technological projects, led by IEEE members, that address local challenges related to sustainable development.’

Engineers and technical professionals have a unique capacity to influence the future by developing sustainable solutions for our most pressing global challenges. Through its Tech4Good program, IEEE HT offers funding to grassroots projects led by IEEE members that aim to address these sustainability issues.

These challenges vary widely across local communities where IEEE members reside around the world. Each project begins by identifying the specific needs of the community in collaboration with local organisations and leaders. The focus is always on people first, rather than starting with a specific technology that needs an application. Teams ensure that their solutions align with one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Code.org highlights a primary concern about the lack of representation in computer science education and the workforce based on gender, race, ethnicity, geography, and even family income. While almost 58% of high schools in the USA have started teaching introductory courses in computer science, a disparity in access to these resources remains. Schools located in rural and urban localities, especially those with high economically disadvantaged populations, are even less likely to offer these essential classes. This unequal distribution of resources limits access to computer science opportunities in education for Black, Hispanic, and Native American students, who often find themselves in lower-tier educational institutions within the downgraded socioeconomic areas.

Kiva pays attention to creating social justice through its lending activities, which have a tremendous impact, especially by emphasising microloans. Kiva purposefully attempts to lend billions of dollars, not only reaching a global audience but also meaningfully altering individual lives. An essential part of their mission helps women gain access to culturally and economically disabling resources needed to create a better future.

Kiva also helps displaced individuals by providing them with the means to rebuild their lives, enabling them to achieve financial independence. In the US, Kiva focuses on particularly vulnerable entrepreneurs within the system’s structure, including entrepreneurs from the LGBTQ+ immigrant community and people of colour, to provide crucial financial support.

Additionally, Kiva works to foster climate change resilience among affected people, guiding them toward sustainable solutions. Measuring impact is an essential element of Kiva’s work. Together with Lending Partners, Kiva sets distinct results and proposes a step-by-step progression system, constantly assessing the changes within borrowers' lives. This approach emphasises Kiva's commitment towards financial inclusion and equity for many different people Kiva deals with.
