In one of our lectures Pheobe introduced us to the idea of a photo essay. A photo essay is a sequence of photographs that explore and document a specific topic, issue, or theme. Unlike a traditional written essay, a photo essay relies on the power of images to communicate its message rather than the use of words. We then were challenged to create our own sequence of photos to use for a photo essay

The Daktyl

One of the first of Meyerhold’s principles that was introduced to me was The Daktyl. Meyerhold regarded movement as one of the primary elements of theatre, and the Daktyl uses this to take the actor from a neutral stance to a state of physical and mental readiness allowing them to be receptive and reactive to any ideas that enter the space.

BU21 and Three Sisters

This was our first time using a script that we ourselves had not crafted for our assessment, which meant we had less room for creativity in terms of story, however it did mean that we could focus on characterisation and the layout of the performance. For Three Sisters we decided to play it traditionally as Chekhov wrote it, compared to how other groups made it their own, however we decided to be more creative with it, making the audience laid it in layers and in a circle much like a Greek Ampitheatre, which made it feel much more like the audience was part of the therapy session. The importance of immediate and given circumstances within both plays also came into the characterisation heavily, and is definitely helping within these next pieces
