I separated each layer of cardboard. The smooth textured part of the cardboard curled up naturally whereas the bumpy side I had to stick with sellotape to hold its shape. From this angle, it reminded me of a gun barrel.

The spiral of wires, draws the viewers eyes to the centre. This reminds me of a portal. Next time, I'd like to add more layers of the thin wire and possibly coloured wire.

Using paper, I cut, stuck and twisted each strip. Without an end goal or look, I was able to create a range of paper experiments. Which I then developed by changing the background or colours.

After cutting A3 paper in two large strips, I curled them round loosely and stuck them together. I then experimented with different angles to capture the swirls.

Using a range of materials I found in class, I made a mixed media piece exploring revolve. The range of coils, twists and spirals embody the variety of routes to explore the theme revolution. I think this outcome was successful as it's clear what my message is.

Using coloured pencils I made an observational drawing of the 'Quipu Womb'. To improve this outcome, I could use a white pencil to blend it all together.

My response to Cecilia Vicuna's 'Quipu Womb' was successful because the material difference ensures the knots are different sizes and shapes. Next time, I'd like to use a thicker yarn as it would be less time consuming to knot.

This outcome wasn’t very successful as it looks very 2D and doesn’t reflect how I want to present blood in my project. Next time, I’ll try to show my wider ideas and not so literal. However, I like how the paint soaked through on to the paper because it reveals the reality of what it’s like to have a period.

A potential idea for FMP that I wanted to explore, is portals. I took inspiration from the portals in Rick and Morty as they can allow substances to escape the passage. They’re typically green and circle shaped so I experimented with changing the colour and shape to resemble a vagina during the menstrual cycle.

With a fine liner and paint, I adapted the shape of the portal to resemble a vulva. I used a variety of colours to show that the shade of blood changes depending on where they are on their cycle. This style of blood looks very animated and doesn’t show how period blood really looks.

With a printout of a portal from Rick and Morty, I stuck red acetate over it to see how the change in colour would look. As it doesn’t have any shadings or variety in colour, it looked very plain. I know next time, that I need to add more to elevate this piece.

With a black and red fine liner, I repeated the outlines of the portal. I think it looks very trippy, like an optical illusion.

To make a portal out of string, I swirled it round in a spiralled pattern. I like string as it’s very malleable. The unravelling of the string reflects the messiness of periods.

My mod rock outcome, includes red rhinestones on the inside and pubes around the vulva. To further emphasise the menstrual cycle, I added string bursting from the sides and draping down in a tangle. However, I don’t like how the string looks as I don’t think it matches the sophisticated appearance of the gems. To fix this, I got rid of the string and used red ink instead.

The red ink is more successful because the shade of red matches the gems better. Also, the contrast between the realism of the ink and abstractness of the rhinestones adds an element of conflict. This reflects the negative misconceptions of periods made to tear women down.

To photograph my work, I used the flash which emphasises the shine of the gems and gives it a ‘wet looking’ finish.

Using clay, I made the shape of a vulva. On the inside, I filled it with red string and included some negative comments people have said to me about periods. This experiment has started to make me question whether I want to include text. Next time, I’ll interview my peers to find out what ignorant comments they’ve heard about periods.

After twisting 2 pieces of wire together, I used a pair of pliers to manipulate the wire into the shape of a vulva. I then used various shades of red water colour to fill the wire shape. To make it realistic, I added messy paint around the edges.

In order to give the blood a 3D element to it, I added hot glue on top. This created a lava lamp effect and gave it a nice shine to the blood.

With twisted pieces of tissue paper, I curled them into a C shape and stuck them together. I then added red ink which gave it a gory finish. I love how vulgar and graphic it is. This could potentially disgust or make the viewer uncomfortable, which is what I want.

Using wire, I made a shape that replicates the labia minora and majora. I tied red string in different places around the wire and scrambled the string to create a ‘messy’ period.

I wanted to see how the string would look if it were straightened out. This reminds of the string of a tampon. Overall, this outcome reminds me of a dream catcher which is not what I was aiming for.

With a print out of a drawing I’d done, I photocopied it and created a series of blood experiments. For this one, I used string and dipped it into ink. I swirled it round the page.

For my next experiment, I placed the ink covered string onto the paper. To get markings on the paper, I pressed it in using a ruler. I then placed the string over it, in a strategic manner. However, I don't like the pattern that it's placed in and how even the string is because it looks too forced and controlled. Periods are messy and aren't uniform, they're different for every woman and different depending on which stage of life the woman is in.

With this experiment, I wanted to highlight the negative and stereotypical views people have towards periods and menstrual blood. To make the text stand out more, I could've made the words in pen bolder than the line drawing so the writing doesn't blend in. To highlight the words 'eat' and 'periods,' I used my fingers to paint the words using ink. Out of all of my blood experiments, this is my most successful one because it delivers my message very clearly and the text draws the viewers gaze throughout the whole piece.

With the same string as my previous experiment, I placed the string irregularly to avoid patterns or a set design. This was more effective as it reflects the unpredictability of periods and lack of control women have over the amount of blood and when and where it exits the vagina.

After dipping my paint brush into red ink, I tapped my paintbrush in order for the ink to splatter. After the red base splatter was down, I mixed black ink with red to make it darker and layer up the splatters. While doing this, I tried to keep the ink in the center to draw the viewers attention to the bleeding vulva.
