Broken Promises

- Jeannette went through a couple of broken promises, but a major one was when she wished for her dad to stop drinking for her birthday. Rex was able to quit drinking, but soon broke her wish and started to drink again.
- On page 116, Jeannette and her Dad were talking about how it's her birthday and how big she's getting and then Rex asks what would she like or wish for her birthday and so she says, "Do you think you could maybe stop drinking?"
-Rex spent a good summer without drinking, but then he broke Jeannette's wish and started to drink again. On page 123, Jeannette talks about how Rex went back to drinking and had broken her promise. "After all he'd put himself through, I couldn't believe Dad had gone back to the booze."
- This picture is an example of broken promises because all the shattering in the picture can relate to Jeannette and her family shattering apart due to Rex breaking promises and not being able to stay sober for his own family.

Coming of Age

- Jeannette and her siblings came of age at a young age due to how they were raised and how they lived their life. At such a young age, Jeannette was cooking hotdogs by herself with no supervision or at least any kind of help from her parents.
- On page 9, it talks about how she was cooking hot dogs and how she caught on fire as well. "I was three years old, and we were living in a trailer park in Southern Arizona town whose name I never knew. I was standing on a chair in front of the stove, wearing a pink dress my grandmother had bought me." Jeannette is barely three years old and she is already cooking hot dogs on her own, without any supervision at least.
- This picture is an example of coming of age and it relates to the quote because in the picture you can see the children working and filming at a young age, which relates to Jeannette because she was cooking hot dogs on her own and she was barely three years old.

Forgiveness

- There were many examples of forgiveness in Jeannette's life. For example she and her siblings forgave their parents for everything they did and even forgave them when their lives were at risk. They still forgave their parents by letting them move in with them in NYC, even though that was supposed to be a different life for them and a restart for them as well.
- For example, Jeannette's parents had moved to NYC, so they could be with their children and of course like always they ended up moving in and out of places, up until Lori was nice and let them move in into her own apartment. Jeannette acknowledges that her parents are back and moving to NYC by saying, "One month at Lori's became two months and then three and four."
-Although Lori did not enjoy having her parents in NYC, she still let them move in into apartment due to them being in and out of different homes. This is an example of forgiveness because although Lori went through alot living with her parents when she was younger and having faced many traumatic issues, she still forgave her parents and let them move in.
- This picture is an example of forgiveness because in the picture you can see two adults hugging it out and looking like they are forgiving each other. This picture relates to the quote because Lori could be the female adult in the picture, hugging her father or mother and trying to show that she forgives them and will them stay in her apartment.

- Throughout Jeannette and her siblings lives, they had to struggle many days without food due to their father always wasting his money on beer and never really caring for his children, until they were starving or going hungry for days. They also had to deal with the many days he would go missing and en up coming home all drunk and starting unneeded arguments with either the kids or their mother.
- For example, any money that Rex had in his pocket would immediately go to buy a pack of beers and then living off of those beers, while his children would be starving and finding their own pieces of food in the trash bins at their school. Jeannette complains that her father somehow always has some sort of money to buy beers and never enough money for his children by saying, "While he hadn't found steady work, he always had mysterious ways of hustling up pocket money, and he'd come home at night drunk gunning for an argument." This is an example of alcoholism because Rex would drink on a daily and return home all drunk, to the point he only wanted to start unwanted arguments.
- This picture is an example of alcoholism and relates to the quote because it shows a male adult drinking and drunk on the couch and behind him is a little girl worried for the man. This can be an example of either Jeannette or her other sisters having to worry for their all drunk on the couch and worrying what his next move is.

Responsibility

- Jeannette and her siblings were the main ones to have big responsibilities in their lives, due to their parents not always caring for them and taking necessary actions to care for their children as well.
- For example, Jeannette had many responsibilities but one major responsibility she had was that she was in charge of spending their money one month, while her mother went out to a trip to focus on herself and her artwork. Rose Mary emphasizes that Jeannette has a big responsibility and continues by giving her two hundred dollars, "Before Mom left, she gave me two hundred dollars. That was plenty she said, to buy food for Brian and Maureen and me for two months and pay the water and electricity." This is an example of responsibility because Jeannette was basically the mother or adult in the house because their mother was going off on some trip and had given Jeannette the responsibility to buy food for her and her siblings and to pay the bills as well. This was a big responsibility for Jeannette because she had to deal with the money wisely and couldnt spend an extra dollar on things that weren't needed.
- This picture is an example of responsibility and relates to the quote because Jeannette could be the little person holding the ball, so it won't fall and the big ball with responsibility written on it is taking care of the two-hundred dollars without spending an extra dollar or two.

Abuse

- Jeannette and her siblings all went through some kind of abuse, but Brian was one of the siblings to be sexaully abused by his grandma or known as Erma.
- For example, Jeannette and her siblings were with Erma, who is Rex's mother and they were staying with her for awhile, while they tried to find a new home. Jeannette and her siblings were alone with Erma, while their parents went out for something and told them to stay. While they were gone Erma had noticed that Brian's britches needed stitching and so she decided to stitch them while he was wearing them. Jeannette acknowledges that Erma was touching Brian and continues with, "I went into Grandpa's bedroom and saw Erma kneeling on the floor in front of brian, grabbing at the crotch of his pants, squeezing and kneading while mumbling to herself and telling Brian to hold still, goddammit."
- This is an example of abuse because Erma could have just sewn Brian's britches without having him wear them and she could have avoided touching him. This picture is an example of abuse and relates to the quote because the little boy crying would be Brian and he would be crying because he was sexually touched by Erma and she didn't care for a single thing she did.
