Using a thorn and a razor blade the Mursi people scar them selves in designs and patters to show beauty. Different than other tribes who use scaring techniques as tattoos, the Mursi people believe these scares add beauty, belonging, and strength- while some others try to hide their scars while going places like school. It is commonly notes that if a women is able to go through this scaring sacrifice, they will be able to cope with child birth, most women complete this with showing no signs of pain.

I think that what I find the most interesting about the Mursi tribe in Ethiopia, is that everything that they use to expand on their beauty is natural. Everything from their perfumes, to head pieces, to body art, is seemed to be produced with natural products found throughout their environment. They also seem to hold deeper meanings and almost any North American practice to added to their appearance for beauty.
In North America it is common (as females) to cover our faces in make up to intensify a women's beauty . This is similar to the Mursi women covering their bodies in clay every day. Unlike the mercy women in Ethiopia, women in North America use products that can be harmful to their skin with little reason to apply make up other than it being an exception seen by society. The Mursi women use natural clays to cover their bodies from harsh weather conditions, being more self helping than any trend seen in North America, such as wearing make up.

I also believe the lip plates are a huge example of how their beauty modifications hold a meaning. Different than piercings and other body modification seen in North America, they are not gotten primarily for the fact that they are considered pretty. With little explanation other than a vast majority of the population wears it. Where as the mercy tribe uses their lip plates to show strength, and allow a child to be viewed as an adult.
In general the Mursi people come off as people who live simple lives, and use the most simple products. By giving everything they do a purpose and meaning allows their simple lives to be much more interesting than seen.

The process for inserting these lip plates isn't one that is done quickly. The first start by removing two of the bottom teeth, sometimes up to four teeth are removed. They then puncture a hole in the lower lip that is about 1 - 2 cm in length, and a wooden peg is placed in the hole to prevent it from closing. They then use healing balms for about a month to two months, larger pegs are progressively placed into the women's lip until it reached about 4 inches in diameter and then the traditional clay plate is inserted.
