Are we color blind or color brave? After watching Mellody Hobson's TED Talk, please reflect on your teaching/communication practices. Are they more color blind or color brave? Is there anything keeping you back? Has anyone helped you in this regard? Does it really even matter? Would love your thoughts! You can answer anyway you choose: write out your response, use pictures, or even upload a video! Thank you!

I am color brave. I grew up with a white mom and a black dad. Racism around me daily. Discrimination around me daily, because of this I recognize and see things that others may not or choose to ignore. I have always spoken up for what’s right which has caused to be looked at as the aggressive one or sassy one. I am color brave because I speak up for my children in my class, I am very out spoken when it comes to my race. I can not sit down and listen to someone who feels that life is just one way and one way only. I hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your honest response! Advocating for your students, knowing that you are being labeled in the process cannot be easy, but yes, you are color brave and have so much to share. Thank you for your heartfelt response.

I teach for a cyber school, so I often do not see my students. I know there are MANY minorities from many walks of life, so I have to be very color brave all the time as I have no idea of my audience. I have learned that names do not indicate ethnicity, so I have tried to learn to not make assumptions based on name or voice.

I think I'm somewhere in between color blind and color brave in my teaching practices. I strive to not see or support any biases, but implicit bias sneaks up on me. Melody just said in our session that one thing she'd like to do/is doing more is to listen. I'd like to build on that and truly practice ACTIVE listening. Asking questions, digging deeper, and making connections with my students to support and foster relationships, regardless of the level of uncomfortableness, is my next mini challenge to myself.

Being color brave absolutely requires us to be uncomfortable and taking that risk with our students, our peers, and friends. It is so important if we truly want to create change in our circles and in the world of our students.

I consider myself color brave. I recognize that I have to model for my daughters the importance of being proud of who they are and how to seek new opportunities to "be uncomfortable". Being uncomfortable is almost a life skill that is needed for all young people to master in order to navigate our society. Thanks for the sharing this TED Talk, I can't wait to share it with my daughter's.

I think I aspire to be color brave, but sometimes I fail. As a Mexican-American, sometimes it is easier to just walk away and not speak for the sake of keeping the peace. As a school leader, we are branching out into to difficult conversations about race with not just the kids, but with the staff as well My hope is that we can all learn to be reflective on our own biases and to use that knowledge to ensure we are not letting these biases get in the way of doing what is best for kids!

I think the greatest realization for an individuals is that we are all color blind and have preconceived notions about a certain race, but the key is that after recognizing this false understandings we work to truly understand others rather than assume we already know. This realization has allowed me to become more conscious of the needs of my students and teachers, which ultimately allows me to support and be color brave.
