'The life of a pit' as Richards writes, is a metaphor for the circle of life; birth, growth and death. She speaks of feeling the process, our our connection to our creation - like a parent with a child. Our craft is our partner and from this partnership we create our wares.
We find comfort and freedom in our craft, the process of making is our escape. When we combine our soul - as Richards mentions - with our hands and nowledfe and follow our love for the material, the process will speak to us in our own place.

And we all know how necessary it is to be “on center” ourselves if we wish to bring our clay “into center””
By bringing ourselves into center we learn more about the different things that we hunger for, such as love, food, money, power.

Richards then talks about education and how currently artistic imagination and independence aren’t encouraged. Instead we are lead through hoops which we have to go through and don’t have much option of branching out until we are older, when arguably all independence and artistic thought has been lost.
