#3: Jordan's Principle

Jordan's principle is a call for the government to support First Nations children while they determine the status of the child. Generally the government won't help a native person with things like medical needs, housing, or things for school, unless they have Indian Act status. Jordan's principle kicks in when the government is trying to determine whether or not a child is considered "Indian" by their standards. The government must put the needs of the child first and then come to a decision about their status, not decide, then help. The government is still trying to fight this idea, but a lot of progress has been made since the principle was introduced in 2007 by the House of Commons. I believe this is important because children should not suffer because the government says that you are one thing, if you are in a vulnerable situation I think you should be supported. If the government embraced this principle it would show the country that they want reconciliation to happen. -Rohan Kenyon

The reason it is so important that these graves are found is so that they can either be maintained or it's so that the bodies can be returned. The difficulty comes when trying to find these graves. Since these mass graves were nothing but holes dug in the ground without any significance, they were never marked, after all this time, there are still thousands of our children in the ground that we haven't even discovered yet. Fund the locating and maintenance of these graves so that the children may find peace. -Malachi

The rights of Aboriginal people are not being implemented by the federal government. Instead, they are drafting new legislation to increase Indigenous peoples' access to culturally appropriate healthcare. The Government of Canada thinks that the current state of Indigenous health is because of shameful historical legacy of many colonialists polices and interventions against Aboriginal people. Many Aboriginal people have experienced hardships in hospitals because workers were racist and not treating them correctly. For example, a 37-year-old Atikamekw woman died in the hospital after filming a hospital worker insulting her whilst crying for help. This goes to show how terrible the current state of the health care rights for Indigenous people.
- Lorenzo Butalid

The spanking law allows the parent or guardian to use “reasonable” force to educate a child. I think that this law should be repealed because of the damage that it could cause children. Even if the force used is “reasonable” it would still have mental damage on a child especially at such a young age. Since this law only allows you to use force against children at the ages of 2 and 12, this law affects many children and can cause problems for them in the future. This law further encourages the use of violence against children by adults who are supposed to be the model for their children. Teaching children through violence isn’t the right way to hand children, it will only cause more harm.
-Gabriel

More recently it has been changed for this content to be mandatory, even providing classes for post-secondary on language and culture. Keeping this content mandatory will educate our generation, past generations, and generations to come about the history of aboriginal people that was never passed on and told, without making it an option for people to ignore. It also will teach about culture and show that they are human beings like the rest of the world. Those who get an education have higher incomes, have more opportunities in their lives, and tend to be healthier. Societies benefit as well. Societies with high rates of education completion have lower crime, better overall health, and civic involvement. Eliminating this education gap would benefit the First Nations community in a very positive way. Next, everyone requires financial assistance.

THE CALL TO ACTION:

We call upon the Government of Canada, on behalf of all Canadians, to jointly develop with Aboriginal peoples a Royal Proclamation of Reconciliation to be issued by the Crown.

This call to action is important to me, because it re-affirm the nation-to-nation relationship between Aboriginal peoples and the Crown. I think that the Calls to Action are not being completed fast enough, because the time to complete some has already passed, like the Call to Action that was to be completed by Canada's 150 Anniversary Mark that was not finished. I believe that when the Royal Proclamation of Reconciliation is issued by the Crown, it would bring more awareness to the Calls of Action. As a result of more awareness and the Crown's acknowledgement, there would be even more steps taken to reconcile, and the Calls to Action would be achieved a lot faster.
- Sybil !

This call to action was to include Community Well-Being and Jurisdiction Initiatives funding "to support First Nations communities to lead the development and delivery of prevention services."
I believe this kind of action should receive an extended funding because some Aboriginal couples have issues that affects their way of raising the children or they needed more education on raising a family's. By this program the parents would be able to learn a proper way to raise their kids and it could also help stop their addiction and heal the mental health problem they have. And they should consider having Aboriginal councilors so that the people who would attend the programs will learn their cultural way of raising a family. -Athena

# 18 Recognize and implement the health-care rights of Aboriginal people means the federal government is creating new legislation to increase Indigenous peoples' access to culturally appropriate health services, but it has not yet implemented the health care rights of Indigenous people. It is very important because each and Aboriginal citizens should have equal health care rights. Health is one of the most important necessities in this nation and each and everyone should get equal health care rights. Many First Nations people do not get equal rights so the government should prioritize health care for indigenous citizens. - Audric Ontario

The federal government acknowledged Aboriginal and language rights in 2017. Many Indigenous languages have been lost as a result of residential schools. The Indigenous Language Act will better appreciate and acknowledge Indigenous peoples' rights. The Act creates the Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages, which will develop technology tools, record fluent speakers, and fund programmes to restore and sustain fluency in Indigenous languages. The Indigenous languages commissioner, like the official languages commissioner, will be appointed by the federal cabinet for a five-year term.
- Louejie

As we all know that residential schools play the big part on Indigenous history it did not only took away their identity and history it also took away their loved ones. And as years goes by, we still find unmarked graves from each province. I believe that before they give a better home to the graves, they should make an investigation and autopsy if it still possible to find out the identity of the deceased. By this procedure the family that they left in this world would be able to recognize them and they would be able to mourn and give prayers. -Athena

Provide adequate funding for First Nations students seeking post-secondary education means that The Post-Secondary Student Support Program and the Inuit and Métis Nation Post-Secondary Student Education Strategies are proposed in Budget 2021, along with $26.4 million in 2021–2022 for COVID–19, to support Indigenous students over a two-year period. The program's goal is to help First Nations provide eligible students with financial aid so they can take advantage of post-secondary education opportunities and better their socioeconomic status. This is in line with the idea that education should be under the jurisdiction of First Nations. This is important because it can helps millions of First Nations Citizens who cannot fund their education for college. As a nation everyone should have get education for the better of their future so funding is a necessity for every First Nations citizens. - Audric <3
