Animal farm, George Orwell (1945)

"Animal Farm", published in 1945, it's a satiric novel/fabel about a farm where humans are kicked and the animals take control, creating a new animal farm, but some animals, like the pigs, take power for themselves and it does not go as planned, taking full control.

On Solariega Farm, in England, a pig called the "Old Commander" (a reference to Lenin) tells the others to start a revolution right before he dies, and so they do. They kick Howard Jones the farmer and create the "7 amendments". 2 pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, emerge as leaders, but the last one kicks Snowball. Napoleon uses the dogs to create fear and starts to change the rules as he sees convenient. He becomes a ruthless dictator.

This book is a clear allusion to the explosion of the communist revolution in Russia from 1917. It criticizes the authoritarianism of Joseph Stalin, portrayed by Napoleon the pig, and it shows how power and corruption can destroy a community, and in this case, a nation. It's not a criticism of communism itself, in fact, George Orwell was a part of the Independent Laborist Party, a socialist community; the book mainly criticizes the way it was managed and imposed.

For us, this book is genius, because it portrays a huge part of the XX century, disguised as a "fable" of animals, it demolishes the worst aspects of the human condition like power and corruption, and the instauration of fear as a method of control. We believe that eveyone should read this book at least once in their lives.

1984, George Orwell (1949)

1984 is a dystopian social science fiction novel by English writer George Orwell. It was published in 1949 as a warning against totalitarianism and it was banned in the Soviet Union until 1988.

1984 has become a classic literary example of political and dystopian fiction. It also popularized the term "Orwellian" as an adjective, with many terms used in the novel entering common usage, including "Big Brother", "doublethink", "Thought Police", "thoughtcrime", "Newspeak", and "2 + 2 = 5".

The story starts with Winston Smith, a low-ranking member of the ruling Party in the nation of Oceania. Everywhere Winston goes, even his own home, the Party watches him through telescreens; everywhere he looks he sees the face of the Party’s seemingly omniscient leader, a figure known only as Big Brother. The Party controls everything in Oceania, even the people’s history and language. the Party forces the implementation of an invented language called Newspeak, which attempts to prevent political rebellion by eliminating all words related to it. Even thinking rebellious thoughts is illegal. thoughtcrime is, in fact, the worst of all crimes

Thematically, the novel centers on the consequences of totalitarianism and repressive regimentation of people and behaviors within society.

The novel examines the role of truth and facts within societies and the ways in which they can be manipulated.

Orwell's novel takes a look at his idea of the future generations and the effect of government on their lives. With this book, he is warning us about the dangers that totalitarianism could bring to the people and how we can be manipulated, gaslighted or influenced by a political leader. We really recommend this book, it makes you question and reflect about our place in society
