Schools have also started their own recycling initiatives I think, and It's been pretty prevalent so far,

So, I have heard of like campaigns, the school will initiate Tetra pack recycling and some of them, they did not last for very long, because the Tetra pack recycling areas, where they get their students to flatten their Tetra packets, and to throw that into the collecting box, almost all the recycled Tetra pack packages couldn't be used because they were contaminated in one way or another, and that did not last very long.

- What are the things you can do to help encourage students to start caring for the environment by recycling?
o As a teacher, if I were to carry out a project, I will need to make sure, whatever project it is, whether recycling or otherwise, I will need to make sure that 1. the objectives can be achieved, 2. the rest of the teachers who are carrying it out, they must be comfortable enough to carry it out. So I will not be looking for very complicated upcycling, it will need to be simple, it will need to be, I would say, limited in its objectives. So, if I were to encourage, I would still continue with whatever is being done, whether it's the plastic bottles or the plastic bags, etc. There also needs to be a greater focus for the teachers to learn better upcycling skills, so that they are more comfortable in carrying it out, or role-modelling it for their students.

- So do you think there is a need to have a new subject which teaches about recycling, especially when it comes to materials that may contaminate recyclable materials such as plastic movers. Because previously you mentioned that Sec 1 did those such cases or was influenced towards those events. But whereas for Sec 2, Sec 3 adn Sec 4, they aren't really too involved?
o I would say not at secondary level. Not at secondary level. Reason? There must be an economically viable reason for a certain subject. I mean, leaving aside all the values and CCE and all that which is already being taught in schools right now, if let's say we want to have something about recycling, it's already covered under CCE. Because VIA is under CCE, right? So, recycling environment is already covered. But to come up with an entirely new subject, there needs to be resources put into it. There needs to be teachers. There needs to be training. And there needs to be a certain end product. OK, if let's say I teach this subject, what do I get out of it? Can a student learning this subject go out, put it on their resume, and say, I know how to recycle, and expect something out of it? This is a very blunt way of looking at it.

- Do you think the school has done enough to implement recycling habits towards the student?
o That's the problem I have with answering this question. If enough means that every single plastic bag or every single plastic bottle gets recycled, for example, maybe we can use Japan as an example. Japan has a very strong recycling culture. Are we there yet? We are nowhere near. So whether or not there has been enough effort to get us there yet, definitely not. Is that our objective? I do not think so. So a better question might be... let me think about this one for a short while... A better question might be... should recycling rank higher as a priority? I do not have an answer for this, and it's something I'm not able to answer at this level.

- Is there anything in the school that encourages the students and the staff to recycle?
o Anything in the school that encourages the students and staff to recycle? Okay. To encourage whether staff or students, there needs to be a worthy outcome. Something that students and staff can see and work towards. That would be the encouragement. So I think two years ago, what one teacher did, the program was something about recycling shoes. ...So the rubber soles of the shoes would be removed and go through some process, I'm not sure what process, and it will be used for surfacing of those running tracks. So they will use the rubber soles or the soles of shoes to surface the tracks....So that actually had a more visual impact for the students, and I actually saw quite a few students fill up a bin. I think the bin is still downstairs. Yeah, the bin is still downstairs. But it has no shoes inside. So, it's something easier for the students and staff to imagine, okay, I'm donating my shoes, and I'm going to see a new running track somewhere. That running track might not be in my country, it might be in Indonesia, it might be in the Philippines, whatever it is, but I'm helping to create that. It's easier to visualize. to visualise. So if we have easier or more easily visualised targets for recycling, that might help. But often it's kind of hard to think about it. I mean, I could visualise, oh, Pulau Semakau is no longer so packed. But that's a bit hard. It's imagining something that's not there, rather than something that is created by your efforts. So I don't really have a... how do I put this? Some target for encouraging students and staff to recycle.

- Can you talk more about the VIA projects in regards to recycling?
o So at Sec 1, what happened was the theme for Sec 1 VIA was environment and as part of environment, students were through a series of lessons told about the impact of recycling and talked about ways to recycle. So one of the ways was upcycling, using plastic bottles to create maybe sculptures of certain Singapore tourist destinations. For example, Changi Airport with a bottle or with three bottles, I don't know what version they had. Or, I don't know why it was though. They use plastic bottles to create usable objects, for example flower pot holders, or pencil cases, or whatever objects that can contain stuff, they use plastic bottles for that. They cut, they design first, and then they put it together, they decorate it, all these kinds of things. How effective they are, I do not know. I do not know if the students actually brought those artifacts home and, hey, I put it as a flower pot holder, or they used it in their pencil box, I don't know. They were told to bring it back at the end of it. I cannot see an impact. But at least they are exposed to those ideas during the lesson, and they do something, a hands-on activity to try and consolidate or to try out what they are playing. I remember one more upcycling project, I can't remember which level that was, either 1 or 2. The students were told to bring old t-shirts...So basically they have a video of how to upcycle those T-shirts, put it together, make it a blanket or something like that. That sounds so weird, right? Yeah.

Promotion is one thing, getting people on board and enthusiastic about it is another. I may know about it, whether or not I'll turn up on that Saturday, that's a different story.

- How do you think we can make recycling more accessible and convenient for use?
o Accessible and closer to areas with higher human traffic, for example, in the canteen. But the problem with it being in the canteen, there will always be irresponsible students. I see you smiling. You know what I'm talking about. There will always be irresponsible students who treat these recycling areas as convenient places to throw their trash. You'll see chicken wings, you will see waste food. You know what I'm talking about. So the hassle of keeping these areas clean and focus on their... focus on the recycling efforts is going to be quite large. I am unsure of how effective that will be. After some time, it will look very worn down, more and more students will use it as a convenient dumping ground, and it will lose its purpose. So if it can happen, it needs to happen in an area with higher road traffic, more human traffic. So that's one. Maybe a club or something in that. For example, we have Info Comm Club, right? So something along that line, but it needs to be, a lot of this needs to be pushed. There must be a lot of drive behind it, whether it's from a student or from a teacher. I think around 7 or 8 years ago, there was this student who was very enthusiastic about... You know that day, 28th of March, when we shut down all the power for 1 hour? Shut down power. Shut down power. Switch off electricity, switch off air-con, switch off.. Its nation wide, its international. Maybe i google this hang on. So the thing is the difference between that activity or rather the person who pushed that activity was that student. It was not a teacher, it was a student. He literally went around class to class, “Hi, have you all switched off the fans, the lights? You just wait for this one hour.” He did it. He proposed it, he checked on it, he did it. And I've forgotten his name... Thank you, Earth Hour. Yes. Last Saturday of March. Yes, there was this student who was very enthusiastic about it. 7 or 8 years ago, that it was a student-initiated program. He pushed for it, he asked the teachers for permission, he promoted it, he put up the flyers for it.
