Marriage has roots from ancient societies, in which people would marry to protect bloodlines, protect and gain property rights, and to secure safe places to breed. Marriage was to represent eternity and an everlasting union.

The rituals of Marriage varied from culture to culture. Some cultures were endogamous, meaning they had to marry into their own social class, family, tribe, or clan. exogamous, (Different regions of social groups), and polygamists.

In European marriages, the act was viewed as a civil institution. Christian Theologian, Augustine, wrote about marriage around 5AD and the church started taking interest in the ceremony. In the 12th Century, the Church finally named Marriage as a sacrament.

Marriage is the sacrament of a sacred bond, or covenant, between a man and woman that pledges them to be faithful and lifelong spouses, loving and caring for each other and lovingly raising and guiding the children they bring into the world.

Marriage as a sacrament in the Church is God's gift of self to human beings. The Christian view of marriage is one that views giving the gift of self to each other.

The four characteristics of this sacrament are mutual self giving, covenantal faithfulness, the becoming of one's real self, and creativity.

Married couples do not always have to bring children into the world. They are encouraged to be creative in other ways they can serve God, such as helping in the community and making sure God's love gets out into the world.

In this form of a relationship, we reveal to God and those around us the couple's love for each other.

God is also very present in this relationship. God is the source of all love.

The color white is an important symbol in marriage. It means purity, as the marriage is thought to be blessed, pure and wholesome.

Rings in marriage are a sign of unity, eternity and never ending love. When a married couple gives each other a ring, they are unified as one in the Church.
