How did the Code of Hammurabi impact our government?

The Code of Hammurabi had a great impact because it was one of the first written documents that talked about governments. It shaped many governments by giving them a outline for how to write the government out. It impacted how the people were treated; middle, lower, or upper class. The code also influenced the need for only one powerful leader. This code gave certain punishments for the citizens who broke the law. Hammurabi's Code included both criminal and civil rules that define conduct. It helped us understand what life was like in Ancient Babylon.

Were the penalties for crimes in ancient babylonia harsher than today? How would you account for the differences

Laws 22 and 265 are laws that were to deter crime and law 196 was to compensate a victim for losses. Law 22 was to deter crime because when you robbed or did a crime you were put to death because you did something bad. Law 265 was also deter crime because when you entrusted cattle or sheep than you had to be convicted and pay the owner ten times the price. Finally, law 196 was to compensate crime because if the person did something to somebody they paid back by doing that to themselves. So it's compensating because it's teaching people the lesson that you shouldn't do something to a person because in return you will do it to your self

Yes, because they used to kill people and make them do stuff like break bones, take an eye out, and they had to pay ten times more if they entrusted cattle. To account for these differences I would like to see less harsher punishments. But, for example if you break somebodies arm then you have to break yours. Instead, I would like to see if people break a person's arm then they would get charged or put in prison instead of being put to death. ( Depending on the case).
