Disability YAL: Fault In Our Stars by John Green

+Letter to the Character

Dear Hazel,

As someone who has experienced watching 3 people I love go through cancer treatments, my advice to you about your parents is to live. No matter how hard you try to make things better for when you die, your parents are going to hurt. They are going to grieve and that is okay, allow them that pain and that process, let them handle your passing as they choose.
What might make it better though, is living. Living every day with love and joy, that way at least your parents remember a young happy women instead of a depressed shell of the child they used to know. Letting them know that you love them and them knowing that you lived will make your passing easier than if you planned your entire funeral or got them a puppy.

Sincerely,
Someone who knows.

How does your positionality bias your epistemology?

+Newspaper Article

 2/18/18
POSITION+EPISTEMOLOGY
written by: Aubrey J. Bohnet

Based on the article "Powerful Pedogogy in English Education by Suzanne D. Knight having more than one perspective is a skill our students should have.
Before I explain how I felt about the article we must first understand what epistemology is; it is the why and how you know what you know.
In the previous article we read it was talking about how if student A was from a middle class family that lived in Harlem and student B had grown up all his life in the Bronx then the students might have a hard time understanding each others view of a certain topic.
The current article talks about perspective and how it can change depending on where you are and who you are speaking to. Looking at one article or book in multiple ways is extremely important and a task that all of our students should practice.
PS. I hope this is what you wanted, I was a bit confused on what we were suppose to be writing about. Thank you!!

VTR. How and why would I use "Think, Puzzle, Explore" in my classroom.

I really like "Think, Puzzle, Explore" because where I am a SETSS provider I am not always in the class with my students, therefore I don't always have advance notice of what they will be doing. This VTR allows me to walk in and look at the text, word problem, article and have a task ready for them.
They can think about it, let me know their questions and then together figure out how to explore and solve the problem, or write the essay.

(I wasn't sure if I was suppose to choose one of the "fancy" response that we are doing for our YALs. Let me know if you want me to rewrite. Thank you!)

+Journal Entry

10/31
Halloween Night
10:50pm
Happy Halloween

Tonight turned out differently then I thought it would...it started when I was walking door to door collecting money for the homeless. I was excited to be doing something positive for those in need and I am hoping to impress Penelope (the prettiest girl I know). Unfortunately I wasn't able to turn in the money I collected, 3 boys in masks jumped me while I was walking and they took all the money, it is like they knew I had it.
I think one of the boys was Rowdy, I know he's had issues with anger in the past but I never thought he would attack me. I guess switching schools is bothering him more than I thought.

+Summery and Opinion
So I finished this book just recently and I see why people are drawn to it, I also see how some people are out off by it as well.
The book is about a young Puerto Rican girl who just came out as a lesbian to the people around her, some took it well, while others did not. She moves out of NYC to go intern with her favorite feminist writer. This time for her is filled with self discovery and her understanding who she truly is and not letting others dictate her thoughts or feelings, no matter who they are.
My opinion on this piece is as follows...I really love that different groups are being represented in this book. Women, women of color, gay women, young women all of those sections of women are being empowered. But the book just wasn't my favorite and it is something that I wouldn't feel comfortable reading with my middle school kids. Not to say that I wouldn't encourage them to read it.

+Post It Notes

So I really enjoyed this article because it reminds me of things that were never spoken about in my HS. How in Tennessee saying your parents were divorced made you automatically white trash and the fact that none of the adults were allowing these conversations to happen made it even more taboo.
So as I was reading the article I was keeping notes on certain sections. In the section "Principal VS Paycheck" I realized how lucky I am to have an extremely understanding administration, where I can use a lot of different material as long as I can prove that it is teaching the standard given. Another section that really had me thinking was "Heteronormativity". This really hit home with me because at the moment I am struggling with my instinctual idea that everyone should be loved and have the option to love others no matter what gender and my newly found religious ideas. So this section made me think about how I should approach these subjects within my classroom.
