The steamboat, invented in 1807, was a massive breakthrough in goods travel once people figured out that it would not pollute the waters. People started making water routes all throughout America after the boats stopped exploding. Many farmers and traders utilized the steamboat for trade and transportation of goods. The locomotive was also a massive breakthrough as it was a steamboat on land, and many companies used it as their main way of transporting goods and people to the west. Locomotive travel soon became the fastest and most popular way of travel.

Yes, because of the rapid land gain America had.

After the Louisiana Purchase, the U.S. annexed Texas and overtook California. The U.S. also gained land from the wars it had with Mexico. From Mexico alone, America gained about 500,000 square miles from the Mexican-American War. Also, the purchase of Florida opened several trading opportunities as they got closer to the Atlantic. The U.S. had continued to rise in population, so traveling west would have been a necessity if America wanted to avoid overpopulation. During the gold rush, locals of the far west feared that their town would get over run with settlers trying to get rich. Even though there was a less than 1% chance of finding gold, people still spend hours digging and sifting through river banks and river beds.

Yes, because of the American government winning wars and buying land from everyone around.

When the settlers first arrived in America, they would take land from the locals that thrived there. After taking most of the locals' land and pushing the Indians west, the settlers decided to try and split off from England's rule. Doing this started the Revolutionary War, which gave the settlers their independence. After all of that, the U.S was ready to expand, so they bought Louisiana territory in the Louisiana Purchase. After making states of what would become Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma, and parts of Colorado, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, South Dakota, and Wyoming, Texas came to them asking to be annexed into the U.S. At first, the U.S declined, but soon accepted after the U.S bought FL in 1845.
