Spent one whole day in graduate school playing with those math blocks and never did understand what I was doing.   Will say that after having grandchildren I do have a little better understanding of those block things. 
The way they teach math today makes absolutely no sense to me but I understand the why of it.  It does help students understand the concepts much better.  I just memorized facts.  For me, that was the easiest way.

On my senior year though, I had a very good teacher and I stopped hating math.
