We took some small carts and had them collide with different objects attached to them (clay ball, golf ball, metal rings). Long during which they talked about their latest book, Call Him Jack:  The Story Of Jackie Robinson, Black Freedom Fighter. They offered invaluable insight into Hall of Famer Robinson's life as a social justice activist; he was far more than a baseball player who "broke the color line". Dr. Williams continued by noting that many black activists and leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks, have been presented in this one-sided way--frozen in time. 

Every student received a signed copy of Call Him Jack and we plan on reading the book in social studies!

We take a quiz typically every other week and students are encouraged to use their science binder while we take the quiz. We will go over the answers next week and students are asked to make corrections using a different color writing utensil. We don't have retakes for the quiz but we do tell students, if they get a better score the following quiz, the previous quiz will be exempt from their overall grade. For example, all students who scored a higher score on quiz 2 will get quiz 1 exempt from the overall grade. We take their thoughts on push/pull factors and relate them to the push/pull factors for African Americans during the Jim Crow Era. Students read about famous African American figures and how they credit the Great Migration for this success and fame. We also listened to a TED talk discussing the importance of the Great Migration.
