Setting
Bruce Springsteen, in a very black moment of his career, didn´t know how to finish the lyrics and passed it to Patty Smith, that according to legend, re-wrote the song while waiting for a phone call from her new boyfriend, the musician Fred "Sonic" Smith, with whom got married in Detroit in 1980. They had a son, Jackson, and a daughter, Jesse. Her husband died of a heart attack in November, 1994.

Meaning
Everyone has ever spent nights without their loved one and missed them.
