Winston is a low ranking government worker who is constantly being watched by the government in the nation of Oceania. They monitor him with the telescreens that are in every household, and everywhere Winston goes he sees the face of their leader Big Brother. Winston feels powerless because of the oppression that is caused by the government's total control over their people. He writes in a journal in his home where the telescreen cannot see him and writes about hating Big Brother. He sees a man named O'Brien during the two minutes hate and is convinced that he is a secret member of the brotherhood, a group that works towards overthrowing the government. He goes on to meet a woman named Julia who is also determined to bring down the regime of Big Brother.

This is similar to 1984 because Cambridge Analytica and the government of 1984 monitor the citizens and use their personal information.

The Handmaid's Tale is a book that is very similar to the story of 1984. The main character is a woman named Offred, which isn't actually her real name but is just of followed by the name of her Commander. Much like in 1984 her every move is monitored by the Secret Police Force. She has no rights and her only purpose is to become pregnant and give the child to a rich family that is having trouble conceiving. They also talk about a time before the new government where everything was normal, but the new government used force to take over the country.

What I liked/disliked

What I liked about the book was how Orwell was able to confuse the reader at the beginning of the story and how that disoriented the reader for the entire story. I also liked the authors ability to give a vivid image of the scene that he is creating. He explains in great detail about what is going on. What I disliked about the story was the weird dreams that Winston has about Julia because they made me uncomfortable and i don't think that the dream was really necessary to the whole story. I also did not like the ending very much. I would have preferred the story to end with the downfall of the party.

You should read this book because it is a very interesting take on what the future could look like if a totalitarian government were to form and take over the free world. This book tells us about the struggles and fears that a person is forced to go through every single day, and how one character almost managed to gain back his freedom.

Orwell wanted to show us the dangers of a totalitarian government and why one should not be created. He also showed us that we were nearing a future that was similar to the one he conveyed in the book 1984. The book teaches us what your life would be like if there were to be one person who completely controls the public. That person controls what you do, say, and most importantly think.

The clock symbolizes the difference between the readers world and the world in 1984. This is just a minor detail that shows that even the clocks are different in the world of 1984. Their clocks are just slightly different from our clocks and that is just another reminder of the differences between our worlds.

The paperweight symbolizes the last connections to the past. Winston buys the paperweight at the junk shop to be closer to the past, given that the object was useless in his society. The party has been able to completely control the past present and future, but the paperweight is one of the things that has been able to slip through the cracks and remains one of the final connections to the past. It breaks when Winston is finally captured showing that the final connection to the past has shattered.

Big Brother is a very important character in the book and yet there is a chance that he isn't even real. He is one of the most obvious symbols in the story. He symbolizes the face of the party. He symbolizes how vague the government really is since no one really knows who the true leader of Oceania is.
