Experimental Particle Physicist @ CERN

I was surprised how Kate is very interested in outreach, particularly in developing countries where there may not be a lot of access to technology and traditional physics labs.

It is very obvious that Kate carries a tremendous passion for her work and communicating science to others. By participating in outreach, the hope is to get more people involved in and excited about science.

I see that many students in developing countries have benefitted from her outreach work. She also does a tremendous amount of work to promote women in the field of physics.

It was interesting to find someone who is able to incorporate their knowledge of science in order to help others in a law based field. Ziegler received a bachelors degree as well as a J.D. with honors in science and physics. Prior to reading about Amy Ziegler I have always heard of majors in English or history when relating to law but Ziegler states that patent law is a "very lucrative, good job for people with a science and engineering background who go to law school." This gave me perspective on the ability to have a variety of studies and still find a job that is a combination of all. Ziegler prioritized studies in physics and "fell into" law which brought her to the success she is now experiencing. When working with experienced scientists and inventors on certain cases her study of physics was a massive help in her overall comprehension of the subjects at hand. Physics provides many jobs that can be extremely interesting to those who are interested in law similarly to me. Advancing to trademarking can be a rewarding occupation and the ability to work in an exciting court room is a plus. These jobs can become attainable once completing a physics degree because it demonstrates determination. Amy Ziegler is now a part owner of a law firm and her team is the "number one filer of trademark in the U.S." This is an excellent example of a multifaceted woman with interest in law and science.

Mark Alpert has loved science his whole life. After high school, he studied astrophysics at Princeton University in New Jersey. For his final project, he applied Albert Einstein’s theory about gravity, called General Relativity, to a hypothetical universe called Flatland. The resulting scientific paper has been referenced by other authors more than 100 times. Because of the success of this project, after earning his bachelor’s degree at Princeton, Alpert tried something different. He studied creative writing at Columbia University in New York City. He earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in poetry and then began working as a journalist. His first job was as a small-town reporter for the Claremont, New Hampshire, newspaper The Eagle Times. He then moved on to the Montgomery, Alabama, newspaper The Advertiser. Alpert is currently an editor of Scientific American magazine and a best-selling author of science thriller novels for adults. He loves spending time with his wife and two teenage children as well as playing softball for the Scientific American team.

I was really happy to get Mark Alpert because I love to read and write thrillers especially. I'm going to read one of his books called The Doomsday Show because I want to learn more about his career and the way that he incorporates science into his writing.

Normally doctors stay at one practice but she has hopped around to different practices. Another thing that surprised me is she was the first Pediatric Cardiologist in Central Oregon which is a big accomplishment.

Many kids benefit from DR. Tajchman. Kids who have heart problems can go to her for help. Because of all her education she is able to help kids in need.

These physicists contribute a lot to society.

I chose Gabriela because I found it interesting how she was so fascinated to be able to explain the way the world works by using physics. She originally wanted to be a math teacher like her mother was, but realized she liked physics more after taking the class in high school. I've always been interested in the logical aspect of how things work. Along with this, Gonzalez is fascinated by how stars and things in space correlate to the study of how everything works. Mixing the two is a perfect representation of two topics that I am pretty fascinated with. Gonzalez works with detectors for gravitational waves, and the collision of black holes and supernova explosions.

I was surprised that not only does Albin's job deal with medicine and biology, but it also deals with some technology as well. Albin has to routinely work with machines like MRI, which treat cancer, but these machines are very complex and require a lot of testing to ensure that they work and patient feels comfortable while it works.

I think Albin is driven by a passion for helping people that are struggling with cancer. As a big part of his job is making sure that the patients feel the least amount of pain possible during chemotherapy. He contributes a lot to the world by taking on this difficult but very helpful job, he helps and treats many people who have cancer, saving their lives.

The skills necessary to operate such a potentially dangerous machine would likely be a background in physics, as the machine uses radiation to kill harmful cancer cells.

Her volunteering in places like Mexico, India, and Ecuador to inform and help people who are directly affected by these diseases or who don't have much knowledge of them. Allison's previous knowledge of the sciences from high school and her interest in helping others is likely what helped her do what she has.

She has more of an unusual career path in the physics world. She has her doctorate, PhD and a law degree from various places.

I thought it was very interesting to see physicists take this path in life. Its still strange to me that someone would get such an advanced degree and then go on to help with the making of movies. She is a real inspiration in the movie and production world to be able to do what she can.

She makes the movies that we love and know more realistic. For a change Mark decided to attend Columbia for a degree in creative writing. He began working as a journalist, taking a completely different direction of what he studied in college. On his journey of becoming a writer he landed a job as a small town reporter. Starting off small he was able to truly see how his new love for writing felt in the real world. He later on moved to Alabama to work on another newspaper named "The Advertiser" and later on finally combined his two passions by writing thrillers and science fiction novels, while enjoying time with his loving family. I believe Mark's love for science gave him the potential to pursue such a successful and fulfilling career in writing.
