The tone of the poem is fun and light. My interpretation of the poem is that, although it's supposed to be an English language class, the students actually learn "Spanglish." There is a mix of Spanish and English languages spoken in the class. I also think it means that culture is integrated into the class as well, whether intentionally or not. One line that I thought was interesting was "In four weeks you can ask, More coffee?, In two months you can say, May I take your order?" (pg. 287) Does this line imply that these students will just end up working at fast food restaurants? Does that mean they don't have high expectations?
