The fly symbolizes how death gets in between Dickinson and her time in the present. The fly shows that death has arrived and will take away Dickinson. Dickinson describes how she feels when the fly is present, symbolizing how she feels when dying. As shown in this quote, "There interposed a fly"(line 12). Interposed means to place or insert between one thing and another. This line tells the reader how the fly interrupts the moment between Dickison and her time in the present living. Through this quote, the speaker of the poem is trying to convey the fact how still and calm their room was during their death. The words, "between the heaves of storm," highlight the fact on the tones serenity and stillness, since this phrase signifies the peace sometimes occuring between storms. In this quote, it states, "With Blue - uncertain - stumbling Buzz -"(line 13). This onomatopoeia contributes to the tone by making it more mysterious. The figure of speech tells the reader that the fly has appeared. It adds a little intimidation because the reader does not know what the fly will do.
