Students were in the computer labs in week 1 as part of a new initiative to help them become more digitally literate in the first weeks. It was great to see what can be achieved when there's technology to hand. This was supposed to be a poster presentation, whereby students get into groups and research a particular topic then present to share their knowledge. Decided that, since we had access to the computers, it would be good to experiment with Padlet. I demonstrated creating the class Padlet on the main screens then suggested they form their own accounts. With minimal guidance they were able to complete the task and also go way beyond my expectations. For what it's worth, this group finished their entire digital induction early, in the previous week, which I've not seen before. A good example of what can happen when students have access to computers, though. One student in group 1 used his Ipad to design a handwritten post for the Padlet. I used Padlet at the end of the class with some basic true/false questions of what we'd covered. For false statements, I asked students to correct them in the comments. The intention was:

• Consolidate knowledge
• Give me feedback on how much students  had understood / remembered
• Quick and low stakes
• Stronger students could lead way and guide weaker students
• Motivate students by showing them how much they had learnt

This was an online class and so it was hard to gauge how much students were following. Useful for me to get feedback that some students are still unsure - I might start encourgaing more screen sharing after tasks. None of the students wrote in the comments to correct sentences, so I shared my screen and wrote the corrections myself at the end. I've been using Padlet as a kind of virtual whiteboard/noticeboard with our new international students. 

They're all learning online this term, so it's great to be able to have all the assessment information, the course study booklet, and general resources in one place. Colour coding is really helpful to make these stand out.

The students are more engaged with it than I expected. They're replying to comments, creating their own accounts, and often want to share more to Padlet than I've planned for them to!

One of them even told me he uses Padlet as a way to compile the research for their first written assessment 🤩 ]]> 2022-02-04 17:06:10 UTC https://padlet.com/eholliswatts/PadletChallenge/wish/2029814944 sarabashir https://padlet.com/eholliswatts/PadletChallenge/wish/2064399547 Last year in one of my seminar sessions, we were listening to a podcast on diversity and I have noticed that engagement with podcasts is not always high and there is also always the age-old problem of some students being shy about sharing their ideas verbally. So I decided that I would ask students to pretend they were listening to this podcast as a 'live talk' at an event they were attending and to 'live tweet' their thoughts. This could mean picking up statements that they could relate to or found meaningful or any comments on what they were listening. I used the Stream format on Padlet for this so it almost looked like a Twitter feed (I also used the little bird icon to make it more real :D). I noticed that students were more readily engaging and even replying or reacting to some of the tweets. 
Another neat feature that padlet has is that you can switch between formats. Once this exercise was over, I switched the format to a Canvas and asked students to categorise their tweets in three key areas - benefits of diversity and inclusion, challenges to diversity and inclusion and strategies to promote diversity and inclusion. This allowed me to help them sort the information that they had heard into key ideas that we were trying to address through the session.

I tried switching back to the timeline format to see if I could catch the essence of what the timeline looked like (I didn't save a picture when I did it as I didn't know there would be a padlet competition in the future :D), but it's not the best representation of what it looked like before.
There were, of course, problems with this use of Padlet. Some students could not type fast enough and keep up with listening to the podcast at the same time, so that was a bit of a problem. I guess the younger generation of students would be better at this. There was also the problem that some students did not know what Twitter or live tweeting was so that required a bit of explaining. All in all, it was a good experience but I would have to put in some thought about how to address the issues I had.
