He was born February 11, 1731 in Virginia. He had 3 blood brothers, 2 blood sisters, 3 half brothers, and 1 half sister. Washington was known to be Anglican and Episcopalian. When he was just 11-years-old, he had started inheriting enslaved people from his father. In his lifetime, he went on to inherit, purchase, rent, and gain at least 577 enslaved people. At age 16, his first career was being a surveyor. Throughout his life, he became part of the war between Great Britain and France called the Seven Years’ War. In 1758, Washington was elected a position in the House of Burgesses until 1776. George Washington didn’t have a middle name. His birthday was also not on February since his birthday fell before the old date of New Year's Day, February 22, his birth year was changed to 1732. His hair was also real! It just looks white because he powdered it. In 1789, his presidential salary was 2 percent of the total U.S. budget. He eventually actually had to borrow money to attend his own first inauguration. He has suffered from a laundry list of ailments such as: diphtheria, tuberculosis, smallpox, dysentery, malaria, quinsy(tonsillitis), carbuncle, pneumonia, and epiglottitis. When he was young, he was a very good student, especially when it came to math and spelling. When he was just 16 years old and had a job as a surveyor, he had to measure land and make maps. In doing this, he actually helped people to know how big the property was and other important facts about it. He had always dreamed of having his own family and eventually, on January 6, 1758, he married a woman by the name of Martha Curtis. Martha and George lived together on a large farm called Mount Vernon and never had any children. After they had gotten married and started to live together, Washington had to join the army and participate in the Revolutionary War.

Significance of George Washington

George Washington was the first American president, commander of the Continental Army, president of the Constitutional Convention, and farmer. Through these roles, Washington exemplified character and leadership. Washington in 1792 was made an honorary citizen of France. In 1798, he started having fears about a French invasion. He was then named by John Adams as commander-in-chief of the U.S. military despite no longer being president. He only served in an advisory capacity because he was old at the time. In 1798, he was also awarded the highest rank in the U.S. military ever! According to the Air Force Magazine, “When Washington died, he was a lieutenant general. But as centuries passed, this three-star rank did not seem commensurate with what he had accomplished”. A law was passed

to make Washington the highest ranking U.S. officer of all time. George Washington would be known as the Father of our Country. When Washington was 20, he had joined the Virginia army. He was a part of the militia during the beginning of the French and Indian war. He once even almost died when his horse was shot from underneath him. George was an amazing leader and trained his soldiers and worked to get the supplies they needed. He had planned to outlast the British Army. Once the war was over, after 8 years, he was unanimously appointed the first president, and had put in place many roles and traditions that our presidents still use and follow today. For example, it was his choice to only have presidents serve for a certain amount of time. He said that he put this rule into play because if anyone was president/king for too long, they would become too powerful, like the King of England. He also helped form the government and defined what a president should do, as well as who should be his helpers. He also founded (started) the offices of the Presidential Cabinet.
