What do teachers need to know?

Gender inequality in education/classroom is becoming a big issue all around the world. In general Gender inequality in education is when one gender is given unfair treatment compared to the opposing gender. For example in a classroom environment teachers are more likely to pay attention and call on male student's rather then females students. This unfair treatment can occur in both developed and developing countries. In developed countries both genders get to attend school, but the main problem is bias in teaching by the teacher. While in developing countries it is seen that males get to attend school and have a good education , but females on another hand get to stay home and do house work.

How can I as a teacher address this?

A teacher purpose is to guide and enlighten his or her students. As a teacher I want all my students to feel comfortable in their classroom and not feel left out. In my opinion learning about gender issues in a classroom is very eye opening and essential. Personally as a teacher I can address this issue by holding conferences to discuss different ways we can involve all students and make them feel equal. Students need to be aware that not one gender is superior than the other. Another way of addressing this issues is creating activities were students are allowed to freely express themselves and have no boundaries of what is correct and not correct to do depending on their gender.

Male and females have always been given different stereotypes, such as females are quiet and submissive and the males are boisterous and rowdy. In education, stereotypes such as these have been inhibiting students of any gender from getting the full education they can receive due to the way educators view their given gender. Children are being emotionally and mentally affected by gender inequality in their classrooms. The teachers are proving insufficient amounts of attention to the students. Every student needs equal amounts of attention and to not be judged based on who they are or what gender they are associated with. Rather educators should be focusing on their students abilities and nurturing the given talents they have been given as a person rather than just their exterior.
