Section 2-4 covers how much football meant to Walker and everyone in the community and how it saves lives. It goes over the struggles these kids have to go through. Sean Gilbert, Pro Bowl DT and former Quip describes football as almost a religion at times to the community. It's a time where everyone can come together and the chaos stops for a little.

Final game of the season for Seniors is the hardest and most emotional time for the players

I learned about Mike Ditka and how much he cared about sports in his life. He cared so much for himself and his teammates and how badly he wanted to win. His passion was never in doubt, because when he was in high school playing basketball, he missed a layup which got him very angry which resulted in him breaking his wrist punching a wall. It also mentioned how difficult it was to win in the Pit. Mike Ditka ended up making the hall of fame as a tight end and then he became a coach. What I took away from reading about Mike Ditka was how passionate he was for sports. He is a teammate I would want to be around and definitely a coach I would want to play for.

Revis goes into life in Aliquippa. How the hardcore and dangerous lifestyle helped him become one of the best cornerbacks of all time in the NFL. He comes back every once in a while and makes sure to talk to everyone he sees there.

“You get through here and the hard times? Everything else is easy.” - Davis. This quote is really important because it shows the mindset that some of the individuals have. The toughness and perseverance to elevate them and make them better people.

How some of these kids go nights without eating or without heat, friends and loved ones getting shot and killed or in prison. So when you play football, all of your problems go away for a while and you can put all of your built up emotion on the field.

Dwan Walker a 35 year old whose sister was murdered in Aliquippa. Plans to run for mayor. He goes into how much support he had, how much he wanted to hate this place but he just couldn’t. “I wanted to leave. I’m mad at this place every day. But I have never felt so much love in my life as I felt from [Aliquippans] when my sister was murdered. My Facebook page exploded; I had to shut it down, there were so many messages.” - Dwan Walker

Beginning

The Aliquippa High School football team had been beaten in the 2004 regional championship. The introduction follows the story of Willie Walker, a High school senior football player who had played for Aliquippa in the championship. His father had died and his mother was addicted to crack but he found refuge in playing football. His coaches had helped him through the hard times when his mother went to jail including getting him groceries, a job, and handouts, but it wasn’t enough and he started dealing drugs for a brief period of time. After almost getting caught in a SWAT raid, he eventually quit when his mother was released from jail.

“Football has provided an identity, given his chaotic life it’s only frame.”

It was interesting to see how giving all the people in Aliquippa were, from helping Willie Walker with food and a job, to giving out green tea, hoagies, and barbecue after practice to support players.

The end of the story glances over Tony Dorsett’s return to Aliquippa. Unfortunately, the reason for this trip isn’t a favorable one which is his brother, Tyrone's, death. Even though Dorsett tried to pull his brother away from Aliquippa to hopefully improve his life, he was unable to. The grip of Aliquippa had to strong a hold on him and pulled him down to the depths. To make matters worse, Dorsett also mentions that his mom, still living in Aliquippa, has dementia. Even saddened by everything that has been taken from him in Aliquippa, he states, “It hurts me to see it, but this is Aliquippa. This is me. This is where I got everything.” Pain and suffering is what Dorsett comes home to see; however, that feeling of home is what makes him not feel hatred against Aliquippa. As he puts it, and as many others who survived Aliquippa long enough to tell the tail, they are all Aliquippa, and Aliquippa is all of them.

Section 6-9

Section 6-9 starred Tony Dorsett and his struggle in Aliquippa and the racial conflicts occuring at the time. His brother died when he was in the ninth-grade which put a huge toll on Tony’s psyche. Furthermore, he was a student attending Hopewell, a high school that was ‘white territory’; at the time, there was a violent rivalry between it and Aliquippa High, the other side of the racial war. Once, in the streets of Aliquippa, roughly 250 whites clashed with police to release dozens of arrested students. It was a terrible event that disturbed even the school districts. Aliquippa High School closed down for three days and Yannessa, the coach for its football team nearly gave up on the program. The town and school had divided, but the football team did not. A group of juniors and seniors met in the gym with their team, and beckoned them to unite despite race— everyone joined in. Eventually, this unity in football brought unity in the community. The racial division started to subside a little after.
