When creating my advertisement, I used an existing horror movie poster as inspiration for my layout, image and other features. This poster includes many generic conventions of usual horror posters which aided me in the making of my advertisement. When creating my poster, I used some conventions from this poster to gain the best possible final product. However, I also manipulated and challenged some of these features and conventions to make my product original and unique. My main inspiration is the Annabelle Creation poster; I have replicated this poster as I have used a similar model; located it in a similar setting and used similar conventions and content and positioned these features in a similar position.

On the posters image, there is a young girl positioned in the centre of the poster; making her the focal point for the audience. The model is dressed in a white nightgown and holding a doll in one hand and an oil lamp in the other. These props are childlike and old-fashioned which matches the model as well as the time frame in which the movie was set. For my model, I also used a child model and dressed her in a white nightgown however, I gave her a teddy bear instead of a doll due to this prop not being a pivotal part of the movie. The teddy bear portrays the innocence of the child which juxtaposes the serious expression that is on her face as well as the eerie location in which the image has been taken. In addition, I did not use the oil lamp or a light source of any sort as this would not match the modern time frame of my movie also, as I used a vignette on my image, the model is already the main focus of the image and does not need additional highlighting. Additionally, I chose to use the white nightgown on my own model as this demonstrates the innocence of the child; making the setting and expression even more extra-ordinary. As my model's feet are visible, I did not place any shoes on her and kept her only in white socks; as the child is outside this is unusual and makes the child look even more out-of-place and highlights any danger as the model could injure themselves. The facial expression that I chose for my model is unemotional and some-what serious; alike the Annabelle model. This gives the model an eerie appearance as an unemotional facial expression is unusual for a child; making her appear out-of place. Both models are also making direct contact with the audience by staring forward; this makes the audience feel uncomfortable as they feel like they are being stared at which matches the genre. The setting on the already-existing horror poster is in an isolated location which is unusual for a child to be by themselves. By the child being by themselves in this lonely setting, they are portrayed as being in danger but also, as being placed in an unusual place. I changed my setting slightly as I used an isolated setting but I used a forest instead of a field. By doing this, I believe that using my chosen setting creates a more isolated and claustrophobic location which makes it more successful within my genre and my target audience as it will create more of an impact. My setting was chosen specifically to look isolated and to make my model appear in an untoward setting.

On the existing horror poster, they have included the title of the movie, tagline, release date, directors information and production company information. I have included all of these features on my own advertisement however, I have also added the names of the two main actors within the movie onto my poster. This is due to actors names being of interest to my target audience as they will want to know who is staring in the movie. This feature will also make the audience want to watch the movie more as they will recognise the names of the actors from other movies. Another change that I have made is moving the title of my movie to the top of the page. I decided to make this change as this is the first feature that I want my audience to notice and as they are more likely to remember the title and therefore, more likely to view the movie when it is released ensuring increased success. I have made the title the largest text on the poster as this is the most important piece of information and what I want my audience to remember. Above the title I have included the directors information which includes two other similar movies. This will invite the audience of these two movies to watch this one as they will have enjoyed these movies and will therefore, want to watch another by this director; as a result, the change of this poster and movie being more successful will increase. Within this piece of text, I have made the movie titles larger than the rest of the writing so that this stands out more to the audience so that they will be more likely to recognise these and have a deeper interest in this poster. Underneath the title, I have included the tagline of the movie so that more information is given about the plot and what may happen within. This tagline matches the image and is also uses the personal pronoun 'you' to make a direct contact with the audience; making them feel like they are being spoken to which makes it more personal. Additionally, underneath the model, I have included the release date of this movie. I have made this larger than the release date that is on the Annabelle Creation poster as I want the audience to remember this but also, as Friday 13th is a pivotal date and easy to remember, the audience are more likely to remember this and therefore, more likely to actively watch the movie when it is initially released. Underneath the release date and at the bottom of the page, I have decided to include production information as this makes the poster appear more professional as this information is included at the bottom of the predominant amount of posters. I did not include images of my production companies logos as I wanted to keep this poster simplistic to create more of an impact and to keep the audience's attention on the main information. Overall, I have kept the content on this poster to a minimum as I wanted to keep the simplicity as well as only highlighting the important information so that the audience is not overwhelmed and can remember the important parts of this movie. The simplicity will also make the audience want to find out more which will make them more likely to watch the movie when it is released as they will be intrigued. I have used red and white text, alike my inspirational advertisement as red connotes danger and suits the genre and white matches the costume of the model and is easy to read against the dark background. As the text is easy to read, the audience are more likely to read the information and therefore, more likely to remember it and actively watch the movie. In conjunction with this, the fonts that I have used are also matching the genre and also easy to read. The font of the title is almost gothic which will inform the audience what genre this movie is from and will give them some interest if they are a fan of this genre. The font that I have used for most of the directors information and the production information is simplistic as this is easy to read and not as of as much importance of the rest of the information.

This magazine is not one of my two focus films however, it did have some conventions of a generic film magazine I wanted to keep this simple as this is the usual style of a regional magazine but I also wanted to take some conventions and features of existing magazines that are not regional.

For my dominant image, I have used a female model that is dressed in a costume from a movie so that the audience are able to recognise that this magazine is a film magazine. This is a usual technique of film magazines, including my inspiration and also, this image will attract the attention of the audience as they will be intrigued as to what the movie is about. I have dressed the model in a costume which includes a white, lace dress and a headpiece that would have been worn by 'flapper girls' in the 1920's. This old-fashioned costume will attract the attention of many as it is an outfit and stereotype that is known by the masses. Also, I have stripped all of the colour from my image so that it appears black and white as this is the simplicity I want for my magazine as well as to add some originality and make my images appear increasingly professional. This monotone colour matches the image on Entertainment Weekly as this dramatizes the image and makes the image appear more professional. My model's facial expression is similar to that of Johnny Depp's on the existing magazine as this adds drama to the image and entices the reader as they will want to find out more about the image and be more likely to read the content. In addition, alike my magazine inspiration, my model is making direct contact with the audience as this will entice the reader even more as they will feel like the model is personally connecting with the audience. For the background, I have used a plain area so that the text is easy to read meaning that, the audience will be more likely to read this content and be more likely to read further as it will be easier and more enjoyable for the audience to read.

Alike my inspirational magazine, and most magazines, I have positioned my masthead at the top of the page so that this is the first thing that I want the audience to see as they will be more likely to recognise this and continue to read other issues; making my magazine more successful. Underneath this, in small writing, I have included the date and the issue number of the magazine as this is essential information however, not the most important piece of information for the audience therefore, the text is in a small font. This is similar to Entertainment Weekly as this information is in a small font however, they have included this above the masthead, Around the models head, I have included sell-lines and sub-heads so that these do not take the attention away from the image but, are also an important piece of information and will catch the audience's attention. These sell-lines are in a smaller font than the masthead yet, larger than the essential information as these are used to attract the reader and potentially make them read on. Also, my dominant image is placed in the middle of the page so that the audience's attention is drawn to this as the image will make them want to find out more about the artist which will make them want to buy it as they will be intrigued. My dominant image does not overlap the masthead as the artist is a new artist in the film genre therefore, they are not yet a larger name than the magazine therefore people would be more likely to recognise the name of the magazine than the artist. Along the bottom of the page I have extra features (what is included in the magazine) so that the audience are more likely to read my magazine as they are more likely to see a movie/director/event that they like. In addition, I have placed the main sell-line over the top of the dominant image so that the audience is able to see clearly that this links with the artist and will be the main story within the magazine.

Masthead
I decided to call my magazine 'Popcorn' as this links with movies as it is a specific cinema food which will make it more recognisable for an audience. The fonts of these two magazines are similar as a block text is usual for the genre and easy to read for an audience.

Main sell-line
I have replicated the main sell-line as I have also made the actors name as the focal point as this will attract the audience and make them want to find out who she is or find out more about her if they know her already. This name is in bold and an easy font to read as this will make the audience read it as it is easy to read.

Extra Features
I decided to keep this feature on my front cover as it is a good way to intrigue the audience as if they see a movie/director/event that they like they will be more likely to read the magazine to find out about them. I kept the colour of the 'plus' red so that the audiences attention will be attracted to this area and kept the colour of the features white so that it matched the colour scheme and so that there wasn't too much colour. However, I placed a slightly-transparent background behind the text so that it is easier to read against the dominant image background. If the audience is able to read the features they will be more likely to read the magazine if they see one that they like.

In addition, I have kept their clothing similar yet unusual and appearing out of place in their environment which will intrigue the audience and make them want to read on to find out more about this image.

I have decided to subvert conventions of a usual film magazine layout for this page as I believe that my layout is practical and easy to follow and more well-structured. On this page I positioned the masthead at the top of the page, alike the front cover, as this is the first thing that I would like the reader to see so that they know which page they are on as many readers may try to find this page so that they can easily navigate themselves around the rest of the magazine. Underneath this, I placed a dominant image which is on the left hand side of the page and covers most of the page. I have done this as my target audience is still young therefore they will not want to have as much writing and will only want to know the essential parts of information. To the right of the dominant image I have placed the features with sub-heads and page numbers as having these in a list will make it easier for the audience to read them and find what they are looking for. Within the features I have headings so that the audience can decide what they would like to read and find the page number easier under the different sections. Underneath the features list I added information about a subscription for the magazine as this will influence the reader to read more issues of the magazine. To the left of the subscription information, and under the dominant image, I have an editors note which will add a personal touch to the magazine which will suit the target audience as they will not want the magazine to be too formal. To the left of this I have added a sub-image which is a photograph of myself as this adds to the casual nature of the magazine and adds more personality. The layout of this page is very structured so that it is easier for the reader to navigate themselves around and find what they are looking for quicker.

Heading
On this Page I decided to keep the font for my heading in the same font as the masthead on my front cover (alike Empire magazine) for consistency throughout my magazine so that the audience, when reading it, will be able to recognise the magazine. I also decided that, to make the name of my magazine stand out, therefore I had this in a larger font than the word 'contents' - unlike Empire magazine. This way, I was able to fit the issue number and date above the heading which looks more professional than that of the Empire page as all of these features fit into the heading box neatly; this makes it aesthetically pleasing which will be more suited for the target audience and make it easier for them to establish what the important information is.

Editors Note and Sub Image
At the bottom of the page, I have included an editors note - which is unusual for a contents page of a film or regional magazine - and to the right of this I have included a sub-image which is a photo of myself. Even though film magazines do not use this convention, I have added an editors note to make the magazine seem more personal, which is also the aim of the sub-image; this will suit my target audience as they are young and will want this page to seem more casual and for it to be more suited for them personally. Unlike the Empire magazine, I have placed the opening of the text in a larger font to stand out as these words will connect with the reader and make it more personal for them and draw their attention to this area so that they will read it all. At the end of the note, I have added a signature as it is more personal and suited to the genre and target audience of the magazine. Overall, the font of this text is small as it is not the most important information on the page therefore, it is not needed to be large as it will be one of the last features that the reader views on this page.

Features and Sub-heads
At the side of the page I have included subheads and descriptions along side page numbers. This makes it easier for the audience to navigate themselves around. Unlike Empire magazine, I have used a rigid structure as I believe that this is easier for the audience and will make them more likely to carry on through the page as they will be able to find an article that they like. Also unlike Empire magazine, I have included different headings so that the audience will be able to chose one that best suits them and find the article that they are looking for easier.

I have created a single page article for my magazine and used the existing magazine article on Divergent as inspiration. On this page I have included a main body of text - alike the Divergent article - and used a pull quote within the columns to catch the readers attention and make them want to find out more. However, at the start of their text they have used a drop cap and, to make my magazine unique, I have not used this feature but rather made the first two words bold and in capitals so that this stands out and they are more likely to read on. Alike the existing article, I have positioned the title of the article at the top of the page so that this is the first thing that people see and will be likely to read about it if it sparks an interest. On both pages, this is the largest feature so that the audience are able to see it if they are specifically looking for it but also, so that it will catch their attention. The existing magazine does not have a page number or website at the bottom of their page however, I have added these features so it is easier for the audience to navigate themselves around and also, to increase the chance that they will visit the website as well. At the side of the image, I have added a byline so that the images are given credit for as this is essential information and makes my magazine appear professional.

Due to this image being of a model, I have subverted this as I wanted my image to be linked to filmmaking and production and not the final product. Therefore, I have not used a model and instead took an image of some production equipment as this will entice the audience who are interested in production. This also adds to the mystery of what the article will be about and they will want to find out more. Alike my other pages, I have edited this image so that it is in black and white as this matches the rest of my magazine and stays consistent throughout. My image is used as my background and fills up the top half of the page; this take up half of the page as this is what the target audience prefer -they will want more images than text as they are still young.

I have created a website so that I can share my magazine online and heighten the likeliness of gaining a larger audience. I have used a simple layout and included more images on this site as this will suit the target audience more which will mean that they will be more likely to read on or read the magazine. When creating this website I used two different magazine websites as a template; the regional North East Crack magazine and the mainstream Empire film magazine. I used two different websites as I wanted to make this website regional as well as adding conventions of a mainstream film magazine due to there being no regional film magazines. This meant that, I was able to make my website unique whilst taking and using conventions of existing magazine websites to create the most professional and realistic product possible.

Website Home Page

For my home page I have kept a simple layout and included more images than text as this will appeal to the target audience and make it more likely to catch their attention. Firstly, at the top of the page I have included the title of the magazine so that this is reinforced and more likely for the audience to remember. In addition, I have used red for this text colour as this matches the colour scheme of the other products and is the same on all products. I have positioned the tabs underneath the masthead and at the top of the page so that it is easy to navigate around and so that the audience are able to find the page that they want to be on.

Images
I have positioned the images in the centre of the page as this will mean that the audience will be more likely to look at these as they look down the page. All of these images are in black and white as these match my magazine and will be more relatable to these other products as well as matching the house style. I decided to add a caption underneath all of these as this is usual for regional and film magazine websites so that the audience are given a slight insight into what this article will be about so that they will read it and want to find out more information. I have structured these so that one image is larger at the left of the page as this will be the first image that the audience look at which will be the biggest article meaning that the audience will be more likely to want to read it. Additionally, all of my smaller images are of the same size as this is alike the other websites so that the structure and layout are all similar and looks professional.

Background
For the background, I have used a simple background that suits the colour scheme. I have included a simple background so that the text is easier to read and the audience will be more likely to read this and find out more about it. In addition, my background matches the one on my billboard as these are both of smoke which will relate these to each other. Finally, I have included a moving image background as I wanted to catch the audience’s attention but, in an attempt to not take their attention away from the important information on the page, I have chosen an image that moves slowly so that they are able to concentrate on the images and text.

Social Bar
Alike The Crack Website, I have included a social bar at the side of my page which continues on every page and is pinned at the side so that it is visible at all times. This bar ensures that the audience will be more likely to find out more information about the magazine as they will, more than likely, be on most forms of social media and will find this an easy way to interact and find out more information about the magazine. I have included these tabs on each page so that they are recognisable and reinforced to the audience, which will make them more likely to follow the magazine on these pages and will be a reoccurring audience member.

For this page, I have kept it extremely simple as this page has been included to inform and to make it easy for the audience to find out how to contact us. I have only included text and no images so that the audience’s attention is not taken away from the important text that is on the page as this is the only reason that they have visited this page. I believe that The Crack contact page is not clear enough as to how they can contact the magazine and it does not give enough options. Therefore, I have included three different options on how the audience can contact the magazine so that they are more likely to do so in their preferred way. Also, I have separated these out so that it is easy for the audience to find their preferred method of contact.

Social bar
By including the social bar, on this page, it makes it more likely that the audience will contact the magazine as these are also forms of contact and will appeal more to the younger target audience as they will be more inclined to use these social media forms for ease.

I have decided to include this page as this is an important aspect of gaining a large and reoccurring audience as this will mean that the audience are more likely to want to read the magazine and other issues that follow. Alike the Empire magazine subscription page, I have included different types of subscriptions and included text that detail these so that the target audience have a choice of how they would like to read this as this will mean that, they will be more likely to want to read this. By including a digital subscription, I will appeal to my younger target audience as they will be more likely to want to read it on a digital device as this is easier for them.

Text
Also alike the Empire magazine, I have capitalised some words within the text as this will attract the attention of the audience and will make them more likely to want to subscribe to my magazine. I have kept the text to a minimum as my target audience will not want to read too much all at one time therefore, I have sectioned this text into three different groups so that they are more likely to read all of it. I have kept the text font simple as this is easy to read so that hey can read it quicker and be more likely to read all of the information.

Buttons
To show the different subscriptions, and to include audience interaction, I have used buttons at the bottom of the page to show subscription options - alike Empire magazine. These buttons mean that they will be hyperlinked to a different page so that they can finalise their subscription. As I have used text rather than images, it is clear to the audience what their options are and which they have to click; this ease will mean that they are more likely to continue with their subscription as they do not have to spend too much time working out which they have to click to get to their desired page.

Billboard
At the top of the page, I have included my billboard as this links all three of my products together to make them recognisable to the audience. By including my billboard, I have placed my magazine spread on this page which shows the audience what they could be reading and what the latest magazine issue is; they have also done this on Empire magazine. The magazine spread adds an image which suits the younger target audience as this will attract their attention.

Billboard

When creating my billboard, I researched existing film billboards so that I was able to appeal to the same audience. When choosing my billboard I chose a Captain America advertisement as this is simple yet effective.

Layout
As this billboard will only be viewed in passing, the audience will only be able to view this for a short amount of time which meant that I had to keep this as simple as possible whilst including all of the information needed. Similar to my inspiration billboard, I have split the billboard in half and included text on one side and an image on the other. I have done this so that it is easy to navigate around and give important information as well as including an image to catch the attention of the audience.

Image
Instead of using a usual image, I have included a magazine spread so that the audience is able to understand that this billboard is for a magazine as well as making my image unique. The colours on this is usual of a film product as they are block, primary colours which will also catch the audiences attention as well as keeping all of the images black and white to match my other products. As I am not advertising a film, I did not feel it fit to include an action shot from a film as this would not be apparent that this billboard is for a magazine. Unlike the existing magazine, I was not able to make my image ‘pop’ off the top of the page as I did not feel like this was necessary due to the simplicity of my product.

Background
I have kept the background with monotone colours to match the colour scheme and, alike the Captain America billboard, I have used a smoke effect. I have used this so that the background is simple yet effective as well as making the text easy to read.

Text
I have included a minimal amount of text so that the audience are given the important information whilst not being overloaded by text as this will not be suited to the target audience. Additionally, I have used the same font as my magazine for the masthead to ensure that the audience can recognise this and the font beneath is kept simple so that it is easy to read. Additionally, I have kept the colour scheme the same by keeping the text in red which will also make the text stand out to the audience. Instead of including the title of my magazine, I have included the title of my magazine and instead of the release date of the movie, I have included the ‘out now’ so that this will entice the reader.
