April 5 – May 4
McClellan's plan was to move his army down the Potomac River and across the Chesapeake Bay, rather then march directly towards Richmond, VA. He wanted to attack the capital of the Confederacy were he felt that the defenses would be weaker. McClellan never seemed to be ready and Lincoln was getting fed up. Lincoln said "How long will it take you to actually get in motion?" When they finally attacked, the Confederate's were weak. McClellan decided to delay attacks and ask President Lincoln for more troops. He refused because he was afraid that Stonewall Jackson would cause trouble and the troops would be needed in Washington.
Results: Inconclusive

August 28-30, 1862

Jackson ordered an attack on a Federal column that was passing across his front on the Warrenton Turnpike on August 28 in order to attarckt pope's army.
The Battle lasted several hours, and resulted stalemate. Pope was convinced that he had trapped Jackson and focused all of his army against him. On August 29, Pope launched a series of assaults against Jackson’s position along an unfinished railroad grade. When massed Confederate artillery devastated a Union assault by Fitz John Porter’s command, Longstreet’s wing of 28,000 men counterattacked in the largest, simultaneous mass assault of the war. The Union left flank was crushed and the army driven back to Bull Run.
Result(s): Confederate victory
