Their primary role in the war was to specialize in mountainous and arctic conditions.

Riva Ridge (February 18th-19th) - 700 men of the 86th regiment climbed up 5 different routes up a 2000 foot cliff to attack the Riva Ridge. They made only one contact with the enemy and that was on the second route. They were met with machine guns and pistols but previously learned not to fire back at night. The Germans had fallen back into their dugouts. The next morning the 10th Mountain Division had charged the Germans with rifles and surprised them. They managed to take the territory without a casualty and without firing a shot.

Po Valley (April 5th - May 8th) - After they secured Riva Ridge, there was a battle on the ridge known as Pizzo de Campiano. The 10th Mountain Division fought the Germans on the 5 mile long ridge with draining supplies, waiting for reinforcements. As the battle went into the next day, the reinforcements came to them as they were about to be defeated. They kept pushing and finally drove the Germans out of their bunkers and off the mountains. The Germans no longer had a hold of the North Apennines Mountains
