Dear RDG 474 Student,

Buckle up, because you are about to learn a whole lot in a short amount of time. First things first, the textbooks for this class are amazing. I know that we don't always read our textbooks when we're supposed to... But I urge you to ALWAYS do your reading before coming to class. You will be glad you did. The in-class discussions are so much more helpful if you actually know what Mrs. Howard is talking about.
Another thing, TAKE NOTES. Mrs. Howard is full of great information and you'll want to remember it.
I hope you really take the time to soak everything in from this class, it's a great one. Mrs. Howard does a great job at helping us prepare to create great readers and writers using best practices. You will learn so much in this class. Enjoy it!

Sincerely,
A past 474 student

The strategies and techniques you will learn throughout this class are going to be so helpful for you in the future. You are able to learn all of the different resources you may want to use over the course of your education, as well as when you start teaching, in one class. The biggest piece of advice I have for you is to not procrastinate. If you do your assignments early, if gives you all the time in the world to ask questions to better perfect your craft. Also, buy the textbooks. I think Teach Like a Champ and the green strategy book are going to be resources I use throughout the rest of my career. Finally: write down/take a picture of everything Mrs. Howard writes on the board. The different strategies, activities, and tech resources will prove to be super helpful when doing assignments for her class, as well as other education classes.

Good luck!
A past 474 studnet

You are going to have an amazing semester! There are so many useful, knowledgeable, and amazing things that you will use once you're in your teaching career. First off, make sure you buy the books. They will most definitely be used once you have your own classroom someday. Next, the strategies and techniques that you learn will FOR SURE be used within your classroom. Many of the strategies and techniques are ones that you have never heard of before, but they are ones that you won't forget. Also, make sure to come to every class period! Each day counts and you are only allowed one miss day, so use it wisely. Have a great semester and don't be too nervous, you will do great!

In this course you are going to learn so many tools that you will want to use when you have your own classroom! Mrs. Howard is extremely knowledgeable about all of the strategies and you will want to remember them. I would suggest writing down the strategies that you use each class period for each of the ERR stages. This is something I didn't do and I regret it. You will need to buy all of the materials for the class. I would suggest buying instead of renting because you will most likely want to keep them. They are great tools for you to use in your future classroom! You are going to learn a lot about ELL students, so work hard on your interactive notebook so you have a good reference. Have a good semester!

Hey there! You're in a really great class with a really great teacher! This isn't one another one of those useless edu classes where the professor rambles on about common sense and then assigns a gazillion lesson plans. All of the work you will do in Mrs. Howards class is really purposeful. Also, if you read one textbook throughout college it should be TLAC. The management techniques it shares are really great to add to your teaching tool kit. Also, Mrs. Howard really actually cares about you and wants you to be a really great teacher so if you are struggling with something... Ask her! The second half off the class is all about ELL instruction and I encourage you to come to every class as its information that you're really going to need when you begin teaching. Do the work, think, come to class, and really soak this class up! You won't regret it!

You are in for a good class! I think that it is really important to take notes. We learn a lot of strategies and techniques in this class. Even if you just notice a strategy that is being used that you like, write it down!!! It will be helpful for MicroTeaching and your future. Make sure you put a lot of time into your lesson. Double and triple check the rubric to make sure you are fully prepared. Try maybe even practicing your lesson in front of a classmate or friend to see if it flows well and is up to the standard you want it. DONT MISS CLASS. It is not worth it to miss and have it affect your grade. You also will learn so much in this class, so you dont want to miss out on an opportunity to grow. Good luck!!!

xoxo,
Former 474 student

In this course you can expect to learn a lot of strategies and techniques that are are not presented in other courses. While the strategies and techniques are presented as useful for reading and English Language Learner students, I have found that they can be very useful in developing a more thorough teaching style. I know most education students keep lesson plans to use in the future, and I plan to go through many of mine and update them with some of the new information I have learned.

A previous RDG 474 student

To be successful in this class just show up and participate. Make sure you stay on top of your work and don’t fall behind. You shouldn’t have a problem keeping up with your work if you just come to class. The only really homework you will have is the lesson plans and micro teaching. The rest is done in class. This class gives you a lot of information regarding to the classroom when you are a teacher. I am a physical education major coming into the class wondering how this will help but it did. You just have to have a good mindset coming in and I know you will end up learning something no matter your major. The class is not just about reading. Once again just show up to class and participate and you will be fine in the class. Don’t worry it will fly by. GOOD LUCK!

You may be thinking, why am I in this class? How will this help me as a teacher? I'm not a reading teacher. But this class will give you so many new strategies and techniques to help you to be a well-rounded teacher, regardless of subject. Also, this class will teach you that every teach is in fact a reading teacher. Being able to fully engage your class and facilitate meaningful reading and writing activities will make your class that much more beneficial to your students. You will also learn tons of classroom management strategies and techniques that you didn't even know you needed to know. This class will help you in more ways than you could imagine, so keep your mind open! Enjoy this semester :)

These tools will help you become a better teacher for your students. You will learn many different techniques about classroom management, reading strategies, and learn how to work with ELL students, or at least give you a place to start with them. This is probably one of the most useful classes you will have as an education student. The class may seem long at times but trust me it is all worth it. Have fun!

I presented my first lesson in this class and it has helped me to grow so much. I have tons of new materials and strategies to help me become a better teacher. Also, I recommend signing up to micro teach at the beginning so you can get it over with, otherwise you will be stressing about that instead of finals.
