My big takeaway from this week's task is discovering just how complex my ecosystem is. Each professional I work with introduces a new facet to the ecosystem I share with them. Just like finding the beauty in noticing a specific tree for the first time, discovering this ecosystem that we share is part shame--that I never really noticed it before--and part joy--that I can see the tendrils stretching out. I've worked on too many small teams in the past, but I could have made them larger by simply meeting new people and introducing them. I'm more motivated to reach out to others just to chat. And as cheesy as it sounds, get some business cards and check my email more often.

I am thinking to write about creating a web site "Graphic Design 101" - probably you wonder why - there are so many resources out there. But in all the classes that I have been in the past, we learn just briefly about the design tools and then we need to continue on our own. Most of the classes just focus on the Adobe software but there are others that are equally good - Figma for example. So, this website is going to be like introduction to all of them - is 101 -so, just the basic stuff. Also, once a week is going to be life lesson.

Maybe can be held from different instructor every week (lets say Paul Trani, Ramirez...).

And maybe every week each college will have 1 hour to introdused its program and showcase the work of the students;

Reviewing copyright and other legal challenges in my career has shown how I've gotten more responsible over the years and my most recent challenges I've handled well. As educated designers we can offer our clients best practices that can legally protect them. Years ago I discovered an American client had been misleading me about the rights they had, researching legal responsibility I found that as an employee I wasn't protected but could be held liable individually in addition to them. Since then I've gotten much firmer with my clients and it makes our relationships stronger.

Hi Frauke, the link for "Business strategy: a guide to effective decision-making" by Jeremy Kourdi is difficult to read. Text gets cut off and re-formats to the screen which creates disorientating layouts. This leads to the pagination not matching the recommended reading. VLeBooks is the only instance in our program where I've run into such a challenge. Can it be shared through a different platform? ProQuest is far better. Thank you for any help you can offer.

I've never had any problems with copyright in my (non-design-related) career.

I wasn't aware though, that when a designer creates his own original work they automatically have the ownership, unless they signed a contract with a client or employer. Certain things are not copyrighted though, like non-visual ideas.

A common example of copyright infringement is the creation of a logo that is very similar to an existing logo, as in the Apple v Prepear case, where Prepear's pear looked very similar to Apple's apple shape.

In some situations, clients may not be aware of the intricacies of intellectual property rights, so we as designers should know more about them. In general, I would say that it is common sense to respect the rights of the author and to follow ethical standards.

Bootlegging, on the other hand, a term I first heard in the week 3 lecture, is a term created to intentionally disrupt or reinvent (correct me if I'm wrong, Frauke). It can be used to challenge social inequalities or to showcase a particular underrepresented group (especially in fashion).

Collaboration or Client?

Hi Frauke, I've been struggling with the collaboration assignments because I keep seeing client work. When a client is open minded and engaging it feels very collaborative and I love those projects. However, when they're more distant it's not collaborative at all, more like being a waiter than a partner. So is collaboration like the quote Christina shared by Ken Kirton saying, "creating a fair exchange of value" as a way to empower both the designer, the client, and the audience? I worked closely with a friend on a collection of memorial essays about her sister a few years ago and we both contributed to the design and the content. It was an important collaboration for me, and we did it for free with the proceeds going to charity. My question is: What differentiates collaboration vs work by a group of people?

Those in my cohort will recognize Giorgi Lupi from my Ides Wall posts from past semesters. She strikes me as a very collaborative person and here is a wonderful example. She writes about the correspondence with Stefanie Posavec, "Instead of using data just to become more efficient, we argue we can use data to become more human and to connect with ourselves and others at a deeper level." They could only plumb those depths through a very personal collaboration.

I love the Japanese poetic form: the Renga. It is a series of linked poems written at a gathering. Each poet contributes a verse in turn that plays off the preceding verse and sets up the following verse. Adapting that to a design exercise could help collaborators to get to know other and build trust--a crucial ingredient for collaboration.

When I was in high school I watched The Valley Curtain, which I watched again recently. They saw their art as collaboration with the community and the fabricators. Most of the documentary focused on the steel workers who rigged the curtain and the pride they felt. Walking through the Gates in the cold was wonderful. They may not have collaborated so much in their artistic vision, but they certainly collaborated with the workers and communities that made it possible. I remember being baffled by The Valley Curtain when I was younger, now I see it as the unbridled joy of collaboration that brings disparate people together.

She started out working as graphic designer for some of the biggest cultural institutions in the UK (ICA, Barbican, Phaidon) before setting up her own studio to focus on her art practice. Her work explores various topics and forms, from symbols to climate change and language. Her projects often emerge from lived experiences or are connected to specific contexts. Her published books include Rainbow (2022/3), Global Warming Anyone? (2019), Le Théâtre Graphique (2015/ 2016/2023) and After the Rain (2024) most of which are part of artists’ book collections. After the Rain is her latest book which is entirely screenprinted and echoes her latest body of modular artworks and the sense of play present in her explorations. Her public art commission, The Heart Bench series (2021), demonstrates how she transforms a universal symbol into a functional sculpture. One of her most iconic artworks is the Fragile UK Flag (2015), where she created the Union Jack using fragile tape and blue paper. Her work has been exhibited at the Design Museum in London and is part of collections at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the New York Centre for Book Arts, FRAC Normandie, MAK Vienna, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, artothèque Bel Ordinaire, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, and the Jan Michalski Foundation in Switzerland.

Links:
sarahboris.com
https://www.instagram.com/sarahboris_ldn/

Are we providing the 3000 word business plan as a document alongside this pdf or should the contents of the business plan pdf (not including the research and development) be 3000 words +/- 10% even if we're structuring it in a more engaging way.

i.e. if we're including job roles and descriptions as a diagram we'll save on words because we won't need fully fleshed out paragraphs for each.

or if we're talking about financial road maps within a diagram, will each number be a word?

Just a bit confused with how the 3000 words will be judged. Are we happy with it being 3000 words but a very loose layout/approach.
