The context of this quote is to show what hell is like and the suffering that comes with it. It is a world of misery which is constant pain and despair in which you live like that forever. The lakes are all flames and pools of lava that spread across hell and under you. The preacher uses this as pathos, persuasion with emotion, to get the sinners from committing sins and repenting.
