Diary of a Wimpy Kid

This book tells the story of a teenager in cartoons and silly stories.

When I first moved to America, learning English was a bit of a challenge. This book series helped me a lot. It made the language seem so simple, the frequent visuals that the author provided in the book gave me lots of context and helped connect pictures to words. It was hard at first since my knowledge of English was only about 100 words. This book and the series made learning a new language a stress-free and fun experience. This was my first book I've ever fully read in English. It was a new beginning, not only for learning a new language, but also for adapting to a new country and learning about a new culture.

Peak

An adventure following an outcast who learns that the meaning of life is living.

Peak was the first book that I fell in love with, not literally, but it still means so much to me to this day. Peak tells a story about a boy, who the book is named after. He is an outcast that is forced to move to Nepal and climb Mt. Everest. This reminds me so much of my life when I first came to the country. I was all alone, in a completely new environment, forced to achieve something great. I was terrified. Reading this book showed me that I was not alone. But in those times when I was alone, I knew that it always gets better, and the best thing to do is to never stop and always keep on pushing. This book taught me how to stay motivated and that good things always come to those who wait.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

Story about a divided boy who struggles to fit in a divided world.

My favorite teacher of all time recommended this book to me, so it has to be on the list. Mr. Drier told me about this book and by the sound of it, I knew I was going to love it. I seem to enjoy books that I can relate to, so the ones I already mentioned are so great to me because it's like I'm reading a mirror. This book showed me how bad things can really get and that I should never take things for granted. The main character's attitude and personality stuck with me because he was always doing his best to keep things lighthearted and positive, no matter what. I learned that

Stories of Gary Vaynerchuk's life, told by him, the choices he made to become who he is.

I was very skeptical when I read this at first, but truth is, I loved every bit of it. This book was written in a way that I wasn't familiar with. I always read novels and chapter books so a book with stories and ideals that the author follows. I found out about Gary Vaynerchuk when I watched a keynote that he did a couple years ago. At first I though, "Whatever. Just another 'motivational' speaker." I was pleasantly surprised. Gary had nothing to sell, he had nothing to promote or market. He was just saying things that people didn't want to hear. This world is tough, nobody owes you anything. He taught me to be smart with money and how to become financially independent at a young age. Obviously he doesn't just have a step-by-step guide to life, but I used his knowledge into my own life. Gary Vaynerchuk educated and motivated my young self and I still preach what he says.

A story told through many perspective about a period of time when a boy decided to bring a gun to school.

During active shooter drills and lock down drills at school, I always thought about being the person to stop a school shooter and save everyone. I never thought about the consequences and how scary it can be to do something like that. This book taught me that, but it also taught me how valuable our lives are. Anything can happen, on any given day, in a moment a person can be stripped of their life. I value my health more than anything because I want to live for a very long time and set a good precedent for my children and their children. However, a person who spends their life being as healthy as they can possibly be, can still die at any given moment. Any accident can happen, especially accidents with firearms. I'm very educated in this field because I've always been around firearms and I play air-soft, so I always try to educate myself, but not everyone has this information and things like firearms in the hands of the wrong people can lead to tragedies. Our lives matter so much, let's value them.
