The challenges of identifying twice exceptional student is that, because of one of the traits is more dominant, the other trait is usually masked. The teacher may not always be able to recognize both, so usually students qualify for one OR the other, instead of BOTH.

The teacher should be looking for characteristics of both "giftedness" and a learning disability. This can be shown through the differences in their performances on assessments and how they interact with people. The teacher is responsible for notifying the gifted and talented teacher and the special educational teacher if they notice either trait. The teacher should also differentiate their instruction to make it challenging enough for the gifted students, but they should make assessments differentiate students who might struggle.
