The U.S. gained this territory by taking matters into their own hands after years and years of watching different tribes and civilizations forming, while the U.S. could be using the land for farming. One man in particular, Andrew Jackson, signed a treaty with Spain and soon enough, the Florida Territory was now a part of the United States.

The U.S. gained more than just Florida with the Adams-Onis treaty, which was a huge benefit. Spain gave up any claims to Oregon territory, and gave the U.S. parts of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama. This helped the U.S. gain land, especially with foreign claims being withdrawn from Oregon territory. Also, land equaled power and more land would make the U.S. more powerful.

Many Native American groups became irritated that the United States was forcing them out of their land in Florida.
