Giuseppe Garibaldi was a very important Italian patriot, general and politician. His nickname was "The Hero of Two Worlds" because he fought in both Italy and South America and he lived in many parts of the world. 

He was born in Nice, in 1807. He began his life at sea and embarked as a sailor when he was very young. He joined Mazzini's Giovine Italia and took part in the insurrectional uprisings of 1821. 

At twenty-eight, in 1835, he left Italy and landed in Rio De Janeiro and until 1848 he participated in various battles in Brazil and Uruguay, where he met Anna Maria Ribeiro Da Silva, known as Anita, and he married her. 

Garibaldi returned to Italy in 1848, during the Five Days of Milan and participated in the provisional government of Milan.

A year later, he participated in the defense of the Roman Republic with Giuseppe Mazzini, Carlo Pisacane, Goffredo Mameli and other patriots, against the French soldiers and the pope's soldiers. He was defeated and so he fled abroad again and then he  returned to Italy in 1854, in the service of the Savoy monarchy because the king promised to help the Italians to liberate Italy.
