Each continuous line drawing was completed at different durations. The first was 1 minute, the second 5 minutes and the third 10 minutes. The longer the duration the more detailed and dense the object became. What started as a simple coiling line became more refined and intricate and this was when clear patterns emerged. The elongated figure 8 shape was used to create the epoxy ball-tips of the hairbrush and was a consistent feature in all three drawings. It utilises colour and form to accentuate the bond between the two figures and demonstrates that despite their contrasting features they are in perfect union. By reducing the image of two people kissing into simplistic shapes of colour, an opportunity to recontextualise and create symbolic meaning is presented to the designer. In this case, I was able to symbolise the contrasting nature of two lovers simply through the use of colour. The use of black and white creates greater contrast and because its purpose is to serve as a logo makes it highly universal on any coloured background. The heavy contrast and simplification of this logo makes it scalable and easily distinguishable. Adobe Illustrator was used to make the resolved digital form. Using the pen tool I was able to create the outline of one half of the owl and then i tweaked the details such as the lines on the wings. I then reflected this shape to make the other half of the owl. As nocturnal eyes are able to see in the dark this is a reflection that in the face of adversity; the darkness; I try to persevere and seek the light at the end of the tunnel. As a designer, this would translate to my design purpose which is to utilise my artistic skills to create positive change in society. The Great Horned Owl was used as the basis for this logo due to its distinctive features, patience, strength and adaptability to changing environments. As a logo, it follows the gestalt principles of proximity, similarity, and symmetry and order. For this photo I chose to wear a black Stussy bucket hat and a black Jean-Michel Basquiat shirt as both have a rebellious nature which is something I wish to express as a designer. Compositionally I am centred vertically within the frame and my nose crosses the central axis using the rule of thirds. The light source is coming slightly from above which is creating the shadow beneath the hat. In order to balance the white and the black, I have allowed more white space above my head to compensate for the heavy black of the shirt and hat in the top half of the frame. Utilising Adobe Photoshop I was able to vignette the photo to create the halo light effect around my head to accentuate my facial features. By relaxing my shoulders and tilting my head slightly back I have created a more inviting image of myself. Unlike typical portrait photos, the composition of this one is more of a square shape which was cropped purposely to align the eyes along the top axis in the rule of thirds and the nose to align with the left vertical axis. By positioning the light source slightly left of centre and my body slightly back to the right I was able to create the shadow along the right edge of my body. This shadow creates a sense of depth and movement and helps balance the large white portion on the right side. The three art movements I have expressed in this self-map are De Stijl, Bauhaus and Street Art. Since I was young I always had an appreciation for architecture and was inclined to pursue it as a profession. It was also my first preference for university and I was offered a place at the Queensland University of Technology. However, I found in my heart that design was my true calling and instead chose to study visual communication in the hope I would develop my skills as a graphic designer. While I opted for design, my interest in architecture never faded which is why the De Stijl and Bauhaus art movements fascinated me. Both these art movements were heavily influential not only in architecture but in design as well. The left side of my self map depicts an artwork I made inspired by Piet Mondrian who co-founded the De Stijl art movement. Bauhaus design principles include the geometric font utilised for my keywords and the abstracted geometric work on the right side of my shirt. Each photo offers a unique perspective into seemingly ordinary scenes in my daily environment. However, by stripping back the colours and focusing on shape and composition we are offered the chance to see how architectural spaces can be adapted from their original functional forms into actual graphic artworks.
