The Freedmen's Bureau was an organization created by the government in the North to help freed slaves. It helped these people get food, clothes, education, shelter, and even some jobs. Although this was a very good service, many white Southerners despised it and wanted it to stop. Unfortunately, while helping freed slaves, it drove the South more away from the North.

The Military Reconstruction Act

After the Radical Republicans gained control of Reconstruction, they passed the Military Reconstruction Act. This divided then South into five districts that the North sent troops into. They sent troops because even though African-Americans were supposed to have equal rights, Southerners still treated them with disrespect. The South was very angered by the North's presence.

African-Americans played a very important role in Reconstruction. The 15th Amendment gave them the power to participate in the government and in politics. Some African-Americans served in the government, like Hiram Revels. However the most important thing was their support for the Republican party. Chances are if you were a freed slave, you were a Republican. This is because most slave owners were Democratic.

Republican members of Rutherford Hayes met with moderate Southern Democrats in order to negotiate the acceptance of Hayes into the office. The Democrats said they would accept Hayes as long as the North withdrew the troops from the south that the North had out with the Military Reconstruction Act. The North agreed and Reconstruction ended. Reconstruction ended because the Southerners went right back to treating African-Americans as slaves.

President Abraham Lincoln was unfortunately assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 15, 1865 . However Lincoln did accomplish many things in his presidency. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation which helped free slaves and even allow them to fight for the Union. He was also a large supporter of the 13th amendment which eventually ended slavery. He was a great president and may he always be remembered.

I am still in debt however, for every tool I use to harvest plants, I must repay with twice the crop I harvested. My family is still being tended to, but I am afraid I am slowly digging us all a grave.

Was Reconstruction a Success or a Failure?

Reconstruction was a hard time for the United States. We had to rebuild not only destroyed locations but also relationships. While these were all worked very hard for unfortunately Reconstruction was not a success. The North worked hard to fix their hard feelings with the South but the South refused to treat African-Americans as equals. As long as they refused that it would be nearly impossible to become a nation with such a large issue creating a void in your country.
