I would choose Private John Shields because he was a variety of things which would’ve been helpful on the expedition. He was often referred into the journals as the blacksmith, gunsmith, or general mechanic of the expedition’s personella. He was praised by the captains for how he improvised, using what little metallic products they carried with them to make hide scrapers and arrow points for the Indians.

I would also choose John Shields because he would the wisest and have the most experience out of all the privates. Another reason I would have John come with me because I believe he would've been loyal to the Corps of Discovery no matter what happened. Having a blacksmith come with us would've been useful because he could've made bullets for hunting and protection.

Native Americans (Blackfeet)

The Blackfeet tribe lived in Montana,Idaho, and Alberta, Canada. The Blackfeet were extremely skilled Bison hunters and lived a mostly nomadic life following the Bison. Eight blackfeet warriors met the corps of discovery in 1806. After the indians fears subsided they decided to camp with the blackfeet. Lewis explained that they were trying to bring peace between all the natives in the region, he went on and added that he gave guns to the Shoshone and Nez Perces who already agreed to this. The Nez Perces and Shoshone were mortal enemies of the blackfeet and received this as a direct threat. That night the blackfeet tried to steal the expeditions guns. Their plans went awry and Lewis and Reuben each killed a blackfoot warrior. This incident marked the first bloodshed between western indians and the representative from the United States.
