Stalin's reasons - (D) Stalin signed the NS Pact as he was fearful that the Western Allies were directing Nazi threat towards USSR. He feared that the Western Allies (capitalist) was using Germany to eliminate USSR (communist) as they have opposing ideologies.

(EX) The Munich agreement was the settlement between Germany, France and Italy that allowed Germany to annex the Sudetenland in western Czechoslovakia. Sudetenland was close to the USSR and had resources that could help boost Nazi Germany's war efforts. Stalin was afraid that Hitler would work together with the allies to take out USSR and their ideology (communism). (need to use more of the terms of the Nazi-Soviet Pact to illustrate how the Pact will help Stalin)

(I have included the (EX) below as there was insufficient use of the terms of the NS Pact)

(EX) The Munich agreement gave Hitler gain control of Sudetenland. Despite Soviet Union having a mutual assistance treaty with Czechoslovakia, they both were not consulted at all about the Agreement. Stalin lost trust in the West because they allowed Hitler to gain military strength. As a result of the distrust, Stalin also saw this it was an intention by the West to allow Hitler to move closer to USSR and subsequently invade USSR. Stalin knew that Hitler will invade USSR eventually as Hitler had openly made his intention known. In the NS Pact, both Hitler and Stalin made an agreement in the Nazi-Soviet Pact to not invade each other.

(A) Stalin signed the NS Pact because it prevented war with Germany temporarily. <del>By signing the non aggression pact, </del><del>it allowed</del><del> Hitler would to focus on fighting </del><del>the Allies on the Western Front and not having to fight a 2-front war with USSR on the Eastern Front</del> <del>west side of the war and leave the USSR alone</del>. By not fighting a war with Germany, Stalin can conserve resources <del>would not have to fight Germany and waste resources, </del>and at the same time Stalin <del>could</del> turned his enemies against each other. This also allowed him to buy time to reorganize and remilitarize his own country and prepare for an impending war with Germany.
(A) Stalin signed the NS Pact because the land gained from Poland as a result of the Nazi-Soviet Pact will give USSR a buffer against an attack and ensure USSR was protected.

(avoid using 'would', 'could' in essays.

(EX) Hitler's fear of Soviet intervention when Germany attack Poland, and thus bring Britain and France into the war (Britain and France had guaranteed Poland’s security). It was agreed that Germany and the USSR would not attack each other for at least ten years, or aid any third party that attack either Germany or the USSR, and resolve any problems between them in a friendly manner. The Pact also divided Poland between Germany and the USSR.

(A) Hitler signed the NS Pact because Germany <del>would not go into war with USSR and </del>can focus on attacking Poland without having to fight USSR. This pact prevented <del>can prevent</del> fighting the war on two-fronts with Poland, Britain, France and USSR. This led to increased confidence and allow Germany to invade Poland unopposed. Not having to fight a 2-front war allowed Germany to concentrate its forces against the Allies and in May 1940 launched a major offensive in the West and Blitzkrieg his way into Europe. <del>This also increased his chances of destroying USSR (Judeo-Bolshevism threat to the world and obtain living space [Lebensraum] for the Germans) as he moved closer to USSR.</del>(let's focus on preventing a 2-front war in this factor)

Many of the top red army officers who eliminated as Stalin distrusted them. High-ranking commanders and ten thousands of Red Army officers were accused of treason, tortured into confession and shot.

(EX) The secret protocol will allow Hitler to occupy half of Poland and the western hemisphere of Eastern Europe. In so doing, Germany was able to gain geographical advantage and concentrate forces against the Allies in the West.
