Solar Energy! What is it and how it works!

The sun bathes Earth in ample energy to fulfill all the world's power needs many times over and then some. The sun's energy doesn't give off carbon dioxide emissions, it won't run out, and best of all it's free. (Well depending on how you obtain it that is)

So how on Earth can people turn this bounty of sunbeams into useful electricity you may ask?

Well the sun's light (and all light) contains energy. Usually, when light hits an object the energy turns into heat, like the warmth you feel while sitting in the sun. But when light hits certain materials the energy turns into an electrical current instead, which we can then harness for power.

Solar power in Arizona has the potential to, according to then-Governor Janet Napolitano, make Arizona "the Persian Gulf of solar energy".

Not only would solar energy be extremely profitable for the state it would be helpful to entire continent and possibly the world in terms of the amount of renewable safe clean energy that can be produced here.

How to Make the Classroom More Energy Conservative! With Renewable Energy!

Using 4-ESS3-1 (Obtain and combine information to describe thatenergy and fuels are derived from natural resourcesand their uses affect the environment.)

There are many things in today's classrooms that don't make good use of energy. Students can draw out a mini-version of the classroom and with using at least three different renewable sources show how we can make the classroom more energy conservative.

Be creative and you can even use some whacky ideas like energy batteries that get charged through classroom pets' movement or obtaining rain to use for drinking water. Another example could be the use of rain water or wind obtained to power fans or lights.
