My name is King James I, and I am the first Puritan King who took over England after the Great Queen Elizabeth. I am known for having the Bible translated into English for the first time and we called it the King James Bible. One of my biggest successes as ruler was founding Jamestown and the newly acquired lands of America.

Charles I 1625 - 1649

My name is King Charles I, I believed that kings should have the most power and that I ruled by God’s will. I had many arguments with Parliament because I didn’t want them to control me or the country’s money, and these fights led to a big war called the English Civil War. Sadly, I lost the war, was put on trial, and then executed, my death was a shock to England because no king had ever been killed like that before.

Oliver Cromwell 1649 - 1658

I am Oliver Cromwell, after King Charles I was gone, I helped lead England as a country without a king and I was a strict Puritan and wanted people to live by strong religious rules. I worked hard to keep England safe and peaceful, but some people did not like how strict I was. When I died, people wanted the monarchy back and invited the king’s son to return.

Charles II 1658 - 1685

I am King Charles II, the son of Charles I. After Oliver Cromwell died, I returned to England as king. My reign is called the Restoration because the monarchy came back after many years and people called me “The Merry Monarch” because I liked fun, music, and plays, unlike Cromwell’s strict rule. During my time, the Great Fire of London burned much of the city, and there were also plagues that killed many people. I had to deal with problems between Catholics and Protestants, but I tried to keep peace. Even with troubles, I brought joy and life back to England.

James II 1685 - 1688

I am King James II, brother of Charles II. I ruled only a short time and I was a Catholic king, and that made many people upset since most of England was Protestant. I gave Catholics important jobs, and when my son was born, people worried there would always be Catholic kings after me but Parliament did not trust me, and many feared I would bring back Catholic rule. In 1688, William of Orange and my daughter Mary came to take the throne. I ran away to France and this event was called the Glorious Revolution, and it ended my time as king.

We are William and Mary, the rulers who came after James II. I, Mary, was his daughter, and my husband, William of Orange, ruled with me and was asked to take the throne so England could stay Protestant. but when we agreed, we had to sign the English Bill of Rights. This law gave Parliament more power and limited what kings and queens could do and it gave rights like free elections and free speech in Parliament. People call our rule the Glorious Revolution because it happened without a battle. We are remembered for starting a new kind of monarchy where kings and queens share power with Parliament.
