He escaped from slavery in Maryland in 1838

And at only 23 Douglass was asked to speak at an anti-slavery meeting.

Johnson became a skilled public speaker back then

In 1835, Johnson ran for the Tennessee House Of Representatives.

Also Johnson hoped to be a compromise Candidate For President in 1860, but the Democratic Party split over slavery.

He was born in George town South Carolina

In 1870 Rainey was elected to the South Carolina Senate.

After leaving Congress, Rainey worked for the U.S Treasury Department in South Carolina for two years.

Also Rainey was re-elected to Congress four times serving until March 3rd 1879.

Stevens was born in Danville Vermont U.S

Stevens was a member of the U.S House Of Representatives.

The Thaddeus Stevens Elementary School in Washington D.C was named after him.

Thaddeus Stevens played a Big part in the Legal Tender Act of 1862.

April 27th 1822-July 23rd 1885

Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio

In April 1862, Grants army was surprised by a Confederate attack at the Battle Of Shiloh.

The Republican Party chose him to run for President in 1868.

Grant also used the Power Of The Government to fight the Ku Klux Klan.

April 5th 1839-February 23rd 1915

Smalls was Born in Beaufort South Carolina

Robert Smalls was assigned to steer the CSS Planter during the American Civil War.

Back then Smalls wanted to convince P.C to allow Black Men to fight for the union.

In 1868, Smalls was elected to the South Carolina House Of Representatives.

He was born in New Lebanon New York

Tilden served as the 25th Governor of New York

Tilden was in the Democratic political party

Tilden was also against Abraham Lincoln because he was worried that Lincolns election would lead to war.

She was the 1st Black nurse during the American Civil War.

After the war, she became a teacher for formerly En-slaved Black people in the South.

Taylor also published her own book in 1902.

She was born at Ulster County New York

Truth was a African American abolitionist

She is also known for her powerful speech "Ain't I a women."

She was the 1st Black women to win a lawsuit against a White Man.
