A Woman in the Dark is a book that makes the reader think about how long-term trauma affects the person’s life, and how blindly trusting people can consequently bring up feelings of suffering. It was written by Raphael Montes and released in 2019. The book is both a detective novel and a psychological thriller, being the first with a female protagonist.
Victoria Bravo was only four years old when a man broke into her house, killed her family, and mysteriously smeared black paint on their faces. Having been the only survivor, she is now a shy, lonely young woman with frequent nightmares and serious difficulties relating to people. Suddenly one day her past comes back to greet her, and she no longer knows who she can trust anymore. Forced to face her own tragedy once more, Victoria embarks on a journey of maturity and discovery that will lead her into dark areas, but at the same time, reveal the possibilities of love. A psychiatrist, a friend she met online, and a love interest— which of these three men are using everything they know to terrify Vic's life? And what does he want with her anyway? (this is a description Raphael Montes himself gives of the book)
This is a shocking and captivating story from the beginning. The book's prologue contains a very strong scene, which is the murder of Victoria’s family. I just didn’t want to ever put the book down.
Victoria is a very structurally layered character, just like all the other main characters. Even in the beginning, we realize that Victoria is a complex character, proving unable to maintain a stable relationship with anyone. This is due to the fact that she is always suspicious of everything and everyone. Over the course of the book we find out why she is like this, making the reader very eager to know all about her.
Raphael uses a very striking feature in his tales: suspense. As I notice how he cleverly writes, the reader never knows what to expect with all the twists and revelations throughout the book, especially in the end. A major curiosity/fun fact is that the book takes place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Locals should be very familiar with many of the places mentioned in the story.
In my opinion, A Woman in the Dark explores all the points of a psychological trauma work and all its difficulties. It is a book that captures the reader from beginning to end. I recommend it to teenagers and young people, even though it contains countless triggers of death and violence.
