Theory- Ecological Model

The Ecological model was created by Urie Bronfenbrenner. This theory focused on examining the individual and one’s relationship with what is around them throughout their entire life. It is composed of five systems within. First, there is the microsystem. The microsystem is what is directly impacting the child, such as: family, school, neighborhood, community, friends, and religion. Second, there is the mesosystem. The mesosystem is the connections with two or more microsystems interacting with each other, such as: the interaction of a parent and a teacher (like a conference). Third is the exosystem. This is a social setting that is around the child. It does not have to have immediate context with the child; it could be the mother or father’s workspace. Something that could affect the child is if a parent gets a raise or even fired form their job. Forth is the macrosystem. This is the cultural context of the person. This could include their socioeconomic status, ethnicity and cultural group. Lastly there is the chronosystem. The chronosystem is the historical time of the child. An example could be if the incident of 9-11 happening in your lifetime. This theory is directly related to my age group because the environment is constantly affecting the children’s day in their lives. At this age they are starting to make major progression throughout every domain: physical, cognitive and social emotional development. Seeing the environment of children helps us directly understand children’s behaviors and personality traits. It can also establish predictions and the understanding of the children’s development.

Carly Skomsvold
