A website called Redbubble sells merchandise from Dead Mans Shoes, they sell t shirts, framed posters, greeting cards etc.

Another thing that tells us this is a thriller is the silhouette of the character, this is done to add mystery and suspense, it also grabs the audience’s attention and they will be wondering who it is. 

Normally movie posters/Dvd covers of this genre have tag lines to intrigue the audience, however this cover features quotes from magazines such as Zoo and Uncut saying things like “Dark, gritty, funny and chilling”, this gives the audience an idea of the film.

In this film at the beginning, Richard and Anthony go on a dangerous journey back to their hometown. Characterisation is another example of narrative convention, films of this genre normal have an antagonist and a protagonist (they are usually supernatural). In this film Richard is the protagonist while Sonny and his gang are the antagonists. The climax is also a narrative convention, films of this genre usually have a dramatic showdown between the main characters and the villain, in this film, Richard confronts the thugs throughout the whole film, however, the climax is at the end when he tells one of the thugs to kill him.

Sonny and his gang are each represented differently, For example Sonny is represented as a badass who does what he wants whereas Herbie is represented as a wimp. Richard is an ex-soldier so he is represented as somebody who is fearless and bloodthirsty, this is shown throughout the film when he is killing the thugs, His brother Anthony on the other hand is mentally disabled and is represented as someone who is quite gullible as we see in the scenes where he is tricked into smoking. Most of the characters seem to be of working class, we can tell by the clothes they were and vehicles they drive.

The usual audience age of a film like this is 18-25, this is because young adults and teens would be more excited by themes in this film. The film makes sure to add lots of bloody scenes of murder to attract their young target audience. Thrillers are usually aimed at a male audience because stereotypically males enjoy violence more than females. Although the film has a lot of blood and violence that is aimed to appeal to males, many young females enjoy watching thrillers just as much as males. 

This film is located in Derbyshire which is a heavily white populated area; therefore, all of the characters in the film are white. Even though people of various races enjoy this film its target audience is white males.

The film is basically his journey of getting revenge for his brother. Throughout the film we get the feeling that he is only getting revenge because it was the gang’s fault that Anthony hung himself, but in the last scene we see that it is more than that. Before telling the last thug to kill him he openly states that Anthony was an embarrassment to him and the only reason he joined the army was so that he wouldn’t be with him. It seems that Richard feels extremely guilty for leaving his brother in the hands of thugs and that is the reason why we see Anthony with Richard almost throughout even though we learn he took his own life. Richard is represented as being smart and cunning, we see this in the way he uses the drugs in his plan to kill the thugs and also in the way he has perfectly planned how he is going to kill the thugs.  The main stereotypes of a soldier are that they are hardened and ruthless, Richard clearly shows these attributes as he murders the gangsters one by one. Soldiers are seen as people who aren’t afraid of death, whether that means killing or taking their own life and Richards portrays this image perfectly throughout the film. For the duration of the film, Richards actions can see viewed as negative, some people will say it is okay because it is revenge for his brother but others will say that murder is wrong no matter what. Nonetheless, in the last scene Richard does something honourable (another soldier stereotype) by letting the final gang member kill him, he decides to spare the gangsters life because he switched his life around unlike the others. He is the stereotypical local drug dealer with the big leather jacket and mean mug but in reality, he isn’t so hard as we see when he tries to confront Richard. He does the cliché routine of making his gang members feel powerless and little just so he can feel superior. Sonny is represented as very negative throughout the film, he is the main one that made Anthony kill himself because he was the meanest and showed no mercy towards him. When bullies are confronted they always show their true colours (being a coward), and Sonny does this twice in the film. When he tries to confront Richard about stealing the drugs and the face paint Richard shows no sign of fear and even threatens him, a “real gangster” would attack Richard on the spot but Sonny went back to his car. Also, when a member is found dead in the toilet he tries to keep the leader role strong within the gang by walking in and not being afraid but once he gets close enough he breaks down and cries which shows he is just an ordinary guy and not a hardened criminal.

When Richard is away, the local gang take charge of Anthony, they abuse him and make him do stupid things like smoking and having sex. Eventually they bully him until he kills himself. Anthony is represented in a positive way as he is innocent and unaware of what the gang will make him do. He is stereotyped as being someone quite venerable due to his disability and he tends to do whatever the others tell him.

At the beginning, he tries to intimidate Richard but it quickly backfires when Richard answers him back, we see how scared he becomes and that he isn’t the bad man he tries to be. This is where the initial conflict starts, later on Richard comes with the resolution to murder all of the thugs that drove Anthony to his death. 
 
Personally, I am not satisfied with the resolution because I wanted both Richard and Mark to live. 
 
 
 
How did you want the film to end? Why does it end as it does? Personally, I didn’t want Richard to 
die at the end, I wanted him to spare Mark’s life and start a new life however this is highly un realistic. I think the film ended the way it did because it is more realistic then a happy ending, if Richard spared Mark and lived happily ever after then the audience wouldn’t believe in it. 
The ending to this film was closed because it ended with no confusion and without making the audience think about what would happen next. Closed endings have either a happy or sad ending, however I would say this ending is quite bittersweet because even though its sad that Richard dies we know he will finally be with his brother Anthony again.  
 
Enigma codes pose questions to the audience which are answered later on in the film, for example, when Richard and Anthony are walking towards their hometown the audience will be asking who are they? And where are they going? These questions get answered later on, enigma codes help to intrigue the audience and leave them wanting more. There are many enigma codes in this film, one of them is in the scene where we first see Richard, we ask ourselves “who is he?” and “what is his mission?” but later on are questions get answered when we realise what happened to his brother and what his intentions are.

It also suggests that the audience use the media to satisfy their specific gratifications. It is the opposite of hypodermic needle theory, instead of assuming the audience are closed minded people who can’t think for themselves, it believes the audience take an active role in depicting what they watch into their own lives. It also suggests that the audience use the media to satisfy their specific gratifications. However, many people have criticized this theory by saying that the public doesn’t control the media and what it produces.

The main logic behind its poor numbers is its lack of advertising and also it has a misleading trailer which didn’t interest the American audience. Another reason for its poor numbers is its scarcity of screenings, it was only shown in a cinema in the USA. The movie got played more at movie festivals then theatres, in total it managed to make £184,000 worldwide. It made less than the budget meaning they made no profit from the film. Its official release date was the 1st October 2004 but it didn’t get released worldwide until 2 years after this date.  The films poor success could also be blamed on the lack of well-known actors to attract the audience.

The genre isn’t entirely clear because at some points it looks like a thriller (when he is pointing the gun at Sonny’s head) and sometimes it looks like a horror (when Richard is wearing his gas mask).

Many people star in this film but the main person is Paddy Considine (who plays Richard) and he is seen throughout the trailer.
 
4. Is the director mentioned? Why is this?
The director (Shane Meadows) isn’t mentioned in the trailer because the audience wouldn’t be too familiar with his work as he wasn’t that well known.
 
5. As the director is not well known how does the trailer entice the audience to view the film?
 
 
6. How does the soundtrack and the voiceover divulge information about the film?
That soundtrack that is played alongside the voice over gives the impression that the film is about vengeance, furthermore, it also gives a hint that the film is a horror/thriller.

They tried to start a website for the film unfortunately it didn’t receive the attention it needed so the website was taken down. The film managed to get a lot of magazine attention with most of the reviews being positive. Total Film Magazine ranked the film in 12th position for best movie, Tony Kebells and Shane Meadows helped promote the film by making an appearance on BBC Nottingham Radio. Dead Man’s Shoes got nominated for various awards but ended up winning 2, these included Director’s Guild of Great Britain and Dinard British Festival.
