Question: How do the vocabulary terms from this chapter help determine the identity of the grave found outside the forts walls?
Answer: One of our vocabulary words, shroud pin, describes a pin that holds a burial shroud together. A greenish stain found in the grave showed that this individual was shrouded. Another vocabulary word, lipping, is a part of a bone that forms over time that shows a sign of arthritis. The story states that some lipping had formed on his spine and right arm. This was a great part of determining the Captain's age.

Summary (Chapter 4 The Captain)

Chapter four in the book, “Written in Bone,” is about a grave that belonged to an unknown individual, later named “The Captain,” found beneath a trash pit. The story mentions two facts that make this grave such a mystery. This grave was found outside the fort’s walls, unlike the other graves excavated during this project. Now, here's the kicker. The grave found lay parallel to the west wall, so that means the fort’s walls were up at the time of the body’s burial. When excavating the grave, they didn’t find any artifacts in the grave. This information led the team to date the grave to 1607-1608. The team also concluded that this person was buried in a coffin, which was a rare privilege for the early colonists. After closer examination of this grave, the team found an object encased in rust. This object was later identified as a captain’s leading staff. This meant this grave belonged to someone in the military who had achieved a high rank. These remains were soon given the tag of JR1046B. These remains were very well preserved. They also concluded that the body was shrouded. Lipping had formed on the man’s spine and right arm which showed me had a touch of arthritis. The lipping and the fused epiphyses on his long bones showed he died when he was around thirty-three to thirty-nine. JR1046B had been determined to be part of the upper, educated class based on many factors; like forensic examination. JR1046B’s cause of death was thought to be an illness that killed in days or weeks. Unfortunately, the team didn’t uncover enough proof to determine the identity of the Captain, but their best idea of the individual was Bartholomew Gosnold.
