Orphan trains were trains that ran regularly through cities of the East coast to the farmlands of the Midwest. It took orphans that were abandoned and got them adopted. Most cases were that the children were adopted into bad families.

Vivian helps the protagonist with overcoming her past and with being able to gain trust for just people in general. The conflict is clearly man vs. self.
