Growing up in India, I saw a lot of poverty. I was lucky enough to be born into a well off family but I saw the struggle of many children on the streets who had to beg for money instead of being in school gaining education as they should be. From a young age, I had decided that I wanted to help children gain education as I knew the opportunities it brings and I believe one of the ways many can come out of impoverish situation is through education. This is the reason I want to become a teacher, to help the future generation gain knowledge and education so that we can decrease the poverty levels around the world.

These concepts are important to know as future educators so that we can understand how to teach our future students who are not properly equipped to speak english. These concepts will make it easier for teachers to understand the needs of the students and the steps needed to ensure proper teaching techniques. This will also help us understand the psychology behind language learning, perhaps helping us become more empathetic and understanding of the struggles of new language learners. I will use this knowledge and especially the concepts by Stephen Kreshen to properly help students learn english. I will be patient and follow the steps of listening, then speaking, writing and reading as the last step.

My dream is to travel the world so I don’t plan on just teaching in one country, I plan on teaching in countries around Asia, Europe, South and North America. I prefer a school environment that is focused on community building where everyone is helpful and enjoy their jobs and are passionate about helping children become the best versions of themselves. As for my classroom, I want the classroom to be an environment where children feel safe and feel like they can freely express themselves. I want it to be an encouraging environment for them. In order to do that, I plan on teaching in a student-centered method with tiny bit of teacher-centered. I love to do arts and crafts so whenever little time is available, I would love to do creative arts and crafts with my students especially during the holidays. I love Christmas and I already have so many great project ideas I can do during Christmas season. I would also include cultural activities in which we can learn about different cultures around the world. My class will have fun activities that will be educational as well. I believe in working hard and also having fun while you’re working hard.

This week I did a slideshow to explain the key concepts. Knowledge of these concepts is important for future educators, these concepts explain the different methods that have been employed in the education system to help students acquire second language. History is full of trials and errors but we learn from those and try to better the system to be able to make it easier for future generations. Some of these concepts will be employed in our classroom or school so comprehension of the concepts is necessary. The pull out instruction is something that I am familiar with as that was employed at my elementary school but as we know that is not the best method. So by gaining knowledge on these different methods, we can decide which ones we might utilize in our own classrooms.

Key concepts- cross linguistic influences

This week I just did a simple table to explain the key concepts. These key concepts are important for future educators to comprehend as we will have students in our classroom who will have a different first language than English and We need to be able to understand the reasoning for errors in their language use and we need to be able to identify their flaws or errors and determine the best course of action for addressing them. If we were not aware of these concepts, we might misinterpret what a student is trying to convey to us especially if they are new English learners which can cause frustration on both ends. So knowing and understanding these concepts will help us understand our students better therefore being able to help them better. As well knowing the different corrections can help us to correct our students in a way that doesn’t feel like an attack or sounds condescending. As an English learner myself, I have dealt with both types of corrections; indirect and direct. Whenever I received direct correction, it felt a little embarrassing at first but then I got over the initial embarrassment and learned the correct way to say or write something, this method does not bother me but if a student is was more sensitive, this may not the best approach. On the other hand when I received indirect correction, for example when someone said “can you say that again”, it always caused my heart to jump, afraid that I had said something terribly wrong, so I prefer the direct correction as it is fast and it does not cause me to overthink. For many students, I am sure indirect correction might be more effective as it doesn’t feel like an attack on the students language, it corrects the students in a nicer way. As a teacher, the best way to handle any transfer would be to sit down with the student and go over what they are trying to convey and then to help them correct their language use. If I had a student who had stabilized in their language learning I would encourage them by integrating some fun activities and technology. I would also encourage language experiences outside of class, students can express themselves better in engaging digital environments like social media platforms, and visiting the web can help them pursue their interests. The gaming industry is especially noteworthy as they will be able to practice their English skills and have fun. Another thing is to trigger their interests, for example, you can integrate current topics, music, movies, shows, etc. to create a class culture.

1. How do SDAIE technique help a variety of learner understand content better?

By simplifying the terminology used in the lectures, SDAIE tactics help a range of learners understand the information easier, while without impeding students who like to be challenged by maintaining the same expectations for all students. The teacher ensures that language learners and pupils with lower reading comprehension keep up with the rest of the class by reducing the vocabulary.

2. Do you believe in the critical age hypothesis?

For certain students, I believe the critical age hypothesis is correct. I understand that people learn languages more easily when they are younger, but learning languages as an adult is not impossible.

3. How do your lesson plans help students link or hook information onto prior knowledge?

In one of several ways, my lesson plans assist students in connecting information to existing knowledge. At the beginning or close of class, I can hook the lesson on the students' past knowledge by asking them how they believe they relate to a component of the lesson from their lives. It will also reflect on previous lesson plans, allowing us to establish links between old and new knowledge.

4. How do you help students become life long learners?

This is where we can utilize Rogers' theory of Human Psychology and make learning interesting in order to encourage pupils to become lifelong learners. Students must be pushed in order for learning to be enjoyable, so that when they are finished, they can feel accomplished and know their hard work paid off. Students will grow bored if things are too easy for them; conversely, if things are too difficult, they will become frustrated and give up. Finding a good balance between the two and demonstrating to pupils real life examples are important principles to help students succeed.

Since History is my favorite subject, I wanted to keep the theme of History and move onto the next chapter of History lesson for 6th Grade which would be Ancient Egypt. Students are expected to read the chapter in the book prior to class. So this lesson will mostly focus on simplifying and explaining information throughly for the students so there are no confusions. This chapter is going to be divided into a two part lesson as Ancient Egypt has too many aspects for it to be crammed into one class. As for the group project activity, groups will be chosen by the teacher as the pairings will include a mix of students at different progression levels in the class.

A great way to encourage the students to develop a growth mindset is by encouraging them to reflect and find a purpose. I would also encourage students to take up challenges. Shattering the negative view of a challenge is an important part of creating a growth mindset. Accepting obstacles and seeing them as valuable learning opportunities is an integral part in developing a growth mindset.
