"I never believed in Santa Claus. None of us kids did. Mom and Dad refused to let us. They couldn't afford expensive presents and they didn't want us to think we weren't as good as the other kids."

Explanation: Santa Claus for most people is a tradition with Christmas. Since their parents refused to let their kids believe in Santa Claus, that would be considered as non-conformity. Which is different or abnormal. The picture below is an example of non-conformity because it shows a person appear differently from the rest of the group.

" I wondered if the fire had been out to get me. I wondered if all fire was related, like dad said all humans were related, if the fire had burned me that day while I cooked hot dogs was somehow connected to the fire I had flushed down the toilet and the fire burning at the hotel. I didn't have those questions, but what I did know was that I lived in a world that at any moment could erupt into fire. It was the sort of knowledge that kept you on your toes."

Explanation: Jeannette realizes that her life if unpredictable. I chose this picture because fire is sudden and is capable of changing. Her early experiences foreshadow combustive events to follow in her life.

"You want to help me change my life?" You're the one who needs help. Your values are all confused"

Explanation: This quote is connected to self-sufficiency by explaining ones issues, yet pointing out someone else's issues. Self-sufficiency is to be able to supply one's own or its own personal needs without external assistance.

" We're not poor"

Explanation: Jeannette firmly believes that her family is not poor, but in reality she begins to define herself apart from her and her family's situation. Jeannette refuses to accept what is really happening.
In the picture it shows a woman in denial, which would describe Jeannette's actions.

" You should never hate anyone, even your worst enemies. Everyone has something good about them. You have to find the redeeming quality and love the person for that."
Explanation: Jeannette explains how hate shouldn't be an option, even for your enemies. I chose this picture as a representation of forgiveness with two people showing their care to make an effort to forgive.

"Dad kept telling me that he loved me, that he never would have let me drown, but you can't cling to the side your whole life, that one lesson every parent needs to teach a child is "If you don't want to sink, you better figure out how to swim."

Explanation: Rex explains that even if Jeannette as a person fails at something in life, he will always love her no matter what. He refers "sinking" as "failing" in life. The picture below shows a young girl sinking below the water which can also refer to a girl letting go, or giving up on reality.
