I believe that I deserve an B in this semester of Comp-Lit 2, and this grade is warranted because I have grown a lot throughout the entire year. I deserve an B in this class not only because of my assignments, but also from my growth in public speaking and reading comprehension. I want my teacher to understand that even though I didn’t put my all into some assignments, the ones I did well on should reflect more onto my grade.

Book Club Letter (Growth as a Writer)

I chose my book club letter as an example because it highlights my writing abilities from the beginning of the year. In this document, my writing was clean and explanatory. I provided backstory on my experience with reading and connected it to my relationship with reading now. I used proper grammar and illustrative words, and I also used figurative language. My book club letter set the precedent for my writing throughout the year, and I believe that it is a well-written document that should be evaluated in consideration to my grade.

Poetry Project (Growth as a Writer)

I selected my poetry project as an example because it highlights a different approach in my writing. I am far from a poet, but I do believe that I did quite well on this. With three different poems and analysis paragraphs, I display my creativity and explanatory skills, and I managed to step out of my comfort zone. I covered themes like hereditary traits, anger, and fear of being misjudged. Although poetry is not my strong suit, this project does a good job at exhibiting my strength in writing. Even you complimented my work, which I'm sure you probably did for everyone else but I'm still holding you to it. I believe that my poetry project is a well-written piece and should be taken into consideration in terms of my grade.

My Star Test score is a representation of my reading abilities. In the beginning and middle of the year my scores were high, and I was even in the 88th percentile. Although my reading level has decreased slightly throughout the year, my scores remain high. As you can see in the learning areas, I only have either secure or developing scores. I admit that I definitely could have done better on my Star Tests this year, but I am still a strong reader.

I not only read in class, but I also got some unrequited reading in at home.

I read Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati this year, a great retelling about the historical figure by the same name. In this book, you practically grow with Clytemnestra, exploring each part of her life as it unfolds among the chapters. She isn't a good person, but she has every right not to be after everything that happened to her. It's hard to be good with the entire world stacked against you. This book was actually a lot like Circe, and you know I'm like a moth to flame when it comes to Greek mythology. This story is angry and tragic and a total must-read.

I don't have any physical evidence for this one, but you've witnessed it yourself. At the beginning of the year, I sat alone and remained quiet. Throughout the school year, I've grown into a more vocal student. When we would do those class "debates" where we'd stand on either side of the room depending on which side we agreed with, I wasn't afraid to just defect to whichever side had more people. I spoke my opinion on the topics, even if I was a little nervous. With the big debate project, you saw how quiet my team was. Nobody would talk to each other, but as time went on our group grew more communicative and productive. When we presented our debates, I tried my best to speak clearly and explain my group's plan, even if it wasn't the best but I was proud of myself. I am more comfortable with public speaking now than I was at the beginning of the year.

I set multiple goals this year, and I actually managed to reach many of them. One goal I set for myself was to go to sleep earlier, which I worked towards by putting my phone away before bed and trying to calm my mind before I slept. Another goal was to ask for help when I needed it, which I worked towards by asking my teachers and peers questions about the things I didn't understand. A challenge I faced was procrastination, and although I haven't fully conquered it yet, I responded by not going myself to the opportunity to goof off on my phone when I had assignments.

In conclusion, I am a good student. I believe that the grade I am requesting is reasonable because of the quality of my best work. I want my teacher to know that I am a good reader, writer, speaker, listener, and participant. I have grown a lot this year in all of those fields, and I have provided evidence to support my claims. Next year, I will continue to grow by working to boost my reading level and enhance my writing skills. I also plan to grow more as a public speaker by participating more in my classes, and I will set goals for myself that I will work hard towards.
